Chapter 116: expecting

Elias turned away from the mirror.

This was getting ridiculous.

He needed to stop thinking about it.

With a sharp breath, he crossed the room and sat on the bed, forcing his body to relax.

It wasn't real.

It wasn't anything.

But as soon as he closed his eyes, he felt it again.

That lingering warmth. That ghost of a touch. That damned voice whispering just beneath the surface of his thoughts.

Did you sleep well?

His fingers dug into the sheets.

He didn't want this.

Did he?

No.

He had spent years perfecting control. He wouldn't let it slip just because of one night. Just because of a dream that felt too real.

Just because of the Alpha.

A quiet knock at the door made him tense.

Elias forced a breath out before answering. "Come in."

The door opened, and a soldier stepped inside. Not the Alpha. Not even one of his higher officers. Just a regular soldier with a message.

"The Alpha has requested your presence."

Elias kept his expression neutral, but something inside him tightened.

He should have expected this.

Still, he hesitated. Just a second too long.

The soldier shifted slightly, waiting.

Elias forced himself to stand.

"Understood."

His voice was steady.

His hands weren't shaking.

He wasn't affected.

At least, that's what he told himself as he stepped past the soldier and walked into the hall.

But no matter how much he repeated it, the truth clung to him like a second skin.

He wasn't sure what unsettled him more.

That the Alpha had called for him.

Or that, deep down—

A part of him had been expecting it.
