Elias followed the soldier through the corridors, keeping his steps measured. He didn't ask where they were going. It didn't matter.
The Alpha wanted him.
That was enough.
Still, as they moved deeper into the main wing, Elias's mind raced.
Had he done something to warrant suspicion? No. He had been careful. He had stayed invisible.
Or was this something else entirely?
Something… worse?
His fingers twitched before he curled them into fists.
He refused to let the Alpha get into his head.
Not again.
The soldier stopped in front of a large door. Not the throne room. Not the war chambers.
The Alpha's private quarters.
Elias's pulse jumped before he could stop it.
But his face remained impassive as the soldier knocked once before stepping aside.
"Enter," came the deep, controlled voice from inside.
The soldier opened the door, motioning for Elias to go in.
Elias hesitated for just a second before stepping forward.
The room was dimly lit, a contrast to the cold efficiency of the rest of the fortress. A fireplace crackled in the corner, casting flickering shadows over the dark wooden walls. The scent of burning embers mixed with something else—something dangerous.
And then there was him.
The Alpha sat in a chair near the fireplace, his posture relaxed but commanding. He didn't look up immediately, as if he had all the time in the world. As if Elias's presence was nothing more than a passing thought.
Elias swallowed the instinct to tense.
He didn't speak first. He wouldn't give the Alpha that satisfaction.
Seconds stretched.
Finally, the Alpha shifted his gaze toward him, those sharp eyes taking him in, lingering just long enough to make Elias's skin prickle.
"You took your time," the Alpha murmured, voice smooth, unreadable.
Elias didn't react. "You called for me."
The Alpha hummed, tilting his head slightly. "I did."
Another pause.
Then—
"You look well-rested."
The words were innocent. They shouldn't have meant anything.
But they did.
Elias clenched his jaw before he could stop himself.
Because that was a test. A reminder. A deliberate poke at the very thing Elias was trying to forget.
And the Alpha knew it.
Elias forced his voice to remain neutral. "If you called me here to discuss my sleeping habits, I'll take my leave."
A flicker of amusement crossed the Alpha's face. "Careful," he said, voice dipping lower. "That almost sounded like irritation."
Elias met his gaze head-on. "I'm not irritated."
"Hm." The Alpha leaned back slightly, drumming his fingers against the armrest. "Then what are you?"
Elias didn't answer.
The Alpha's gaze sharpened.
Then, with slow, deliberate ease, he gestured to the seat across from him. "Sit."
Elias didn't move immediately.
There was something about this moment. Something different.
Last night, he had convinced himself that nothing had happened. That it was just his mind playing tricks on him.
But standing here now, with the Alpha looking at him like this—
Like he knew.
Like he remembered.
Elias felt something deep inside him twist.
But he didn't let it show.
Instead, he walked forward, calm and steady, and sat across from the Alpha, mirroring his posture.
Unshaken.
Unmoved.
Unbothered.
Even as his skin burned under the weight of that knowing stare.
The Alpha smirked slightly, as if entertained by the act.
Then, finally—
"You intrigue me, Elias."
The words were quiet. Almost lazy.
But beneath them, there was something else.
Something dangerous.
Something Elias wasn't sure he was ready to face.
