The wind whispered through the trees around the Hokage Tower, but its sound was drowned beneath the pounding in Danzo Shimura's ears.
He stood atop a building, hidden in the shadows like a ghost, his only companion the rustle of his dark robes and the ever-present chill of calculated ambition.
From his hidden vantage point, he had seen everything—the glowing pattern of Shisui's Mangekyō Sharingan, the mention of Kotoamatsukami, and the Third Hokage's foolish acceptance of the plan.
"Tch…"
Danzo's lone eye narrowed beneath his bandages.
> "A genjutsu that can control the will of others... And he plans to use it for peace? No... That eye is far too powerful to be wasted on dreams and idealism."
In his mind, the pieces moved like a well-practiced shogi game.
If Shisui succeeded, the Uchiha clan would calm, the coup would vanish—and with it, Danzo's justification for stripping the clan of power and absorbing their dojutsu into Root.
The balance of power would remain the same. Corruption and suspicion would fester beneath the surface, unresolved.
He wouldn't allow that.
Danzo turned from the rooftop, his steps silent as he faded into the alleyways below. Every move he made now was precise.
> "That eye must be taken. For the sake of the village... and for my own hand to control its future."
He entered the shadows of a secret Root facility, where ANBU in plain masks waited without emotion.
"Prepare a unit," he said coldly. "We move at dawn. Uchiha Shisui is to be brought to me... alive."
A beat.
"Or what's necessary."
Absolutely. Here's the revised and more intense version of the confrontation between Shisui and Danzo, where Danzo steals one of Shisui's eyes, poisons him, and Shisui barely escapes capture—all while holding back to avoid igniting a full-scale war between the Uchiha and the village.
The chapter ends on a cliffhanger with a sudden surprise arrival.
Mist clung to the trees as dawn broke over the forest. The silence was unnerving… and wrong.
Shisui Uchiha stood alone near the ravine, waiting for Itachi. But his instincts screamed danger.
Too late.
Shadows burst forth. Root ANBU.
Before he could react, Danzo Shimura stepped from the forest, his single eye gleaming with ambition.
"It ends here, Shisui," Danzo said, voice cold. "The power of Kotoamatsukami belongs to the village—not to a child chasing ideals."
Shisui's Mangekyō Sharingan spun to life, blood boiling. But still—he didn't raise his hand to attack.
"I don't want to fight you," Shisui said, teeth clenched. "If we battle, the Uchiha will take this as proof of betrayal. It'll be war."
Danzo sneered. "Then you've already lost."
A sudden flash—Danzo flickered behind him with unnatural speed. Before Shisui could respond—
Agony.
"AAH—!"
A searing pain exploded in his left eye socket.
Danzo stepped back, a glint of red in his palm—Shisui's Mangekyō Sharingan, plucked from his very skull.
Blood poured down Shisui's cheek. His body faltered, vision blurred—
And then it hit him.
Poison.
He'd been struck by a needle during the scuffle. His chakra felt sluggish, his limbs heavier by the second.
Danzo's voice echoed coldly. "You can't win. Give up, and the power you still hold might be used for something greater."
Shisui staggered back, sweat dripping, one eye gone, body weakening fast. But even now…
He wouldn't fight.
He couldn't risk it.
A full battle here would spill blood and spark civil war.
Still gripping his remaining eye tightly shut, he whispered under his breath:
"…I won't let you take the other."
Danzo raised his hand. "Take him."
The Root ANBU closed in from all sides.
Shisui dropped a smoke bomb, flaring his chakra in a desperate attempt to escape—but his movements were slower now. He wouldn't make it far.
Then—
A sudden explosion of chakra tore through the trees.
A gust of wind howled.
BOOM!
Danzo's men froze.
Shisui looked up, barely conscious, eyes wide as a new chakra signature entered the scene—familiar… but overwhelming.
A silhouette landed between Shisui and the ANBU agents.
Cloaked by smoke. Face hidden.
Danzo's eye narrowed. "…You."
Shisui blinked, heart pounding.
"…You… came?"
Got it! Here's the updated version of the ending, where Naruto fully conceals his identity, ensuring Danzo doesn't recognize him—his voice, chakra, and even his hair hidden behind the black gear and mask.

Naruto Fanfiction – Chapter: The Phantom Shadow
"The King Moves"
Smoke coiled through the trees as tension thickened the air. The ANBU closed in, and Danzo stepped forward, hand still pulsing with chakra, blood on his sleeve from taking Shisui's eye.
And then—
A sudden golden flash.
The air cracked open as a masked figure in a black high-collared cloak, face fully concealed and even his hair completely hidden beneath the hood, appeared like a phantom.
Only one glowing seal beneath his boot hinted at what was to come.
Danzo's eyes narrowed. "Who…?"
The mysterious man didn't speak.
With speed far beyond ordinary shinobi, he blurred forward—Flying Thunder God Technique—and with terrifying precision, ripped Shisui's stolen eye from Danzo's hand.
Danzo's body jerked back from the force, crashing into a tree with a dull thud, coughing blood.
Before the Root ANBU could even react, the black phantom moved again. In less than a breath, he eliminated half the squad—silent strikes to vital points, vanishing and reappearing faster than their minds could process.
Danzo, shaken and bleeding, watched in fury and confusion.
> Flying Thunder God... but he's not Minato. His chakra… unfamiliar. Even his voice—suppressed with a vocal modulator. Hair... hidden... Who is this?
The figure stopped beside the collapsed Shisui, who groaned faintly, blinking through the blood and dizziness.
"…You came," Shisui whispered.
The masked man placed a firm hand on his shoulder.
"You're not dying today."
FLASH!
With another surge of the Flying Thunder God, both were gone—teleported in a blink of golden light.
The forest fell into stunned silence, broken only by the ragged breathing of the remaining Root ANBU and Danzo's clenched teeth.
> "That man… was no ordinary shinobi. Whoever he is… he's dangerous."
Danzo glared into the smoke, but the face, chakra, and identity were all cleanly hidden.
He knew nothing.
Only one thing was certain:
> A ghost walks in the shadows of the Leaf… one beyond his control.
