Yuuto's Challenge
Practice ended later than usual. The gym was filled with the echoes of volleyballs hitting the floor, sneakers squeaking, and Coach Fujimoto's firm voice correcting their positioning.
By the time the final whistle blew, most of the team collapsed onto the benches, exhausted. But Renji still felt restless.
His mind had been a mess all day.
Every time Asuka smiled at him, every time she casually nudged his shoulder, every time her laughter rang out across the gym—his heart reacted in ways he wasn't prepared for.
And worst of all?
Yuuto knew.
The entire practice, Yuuto's gaze had lingered on him, sharp and unreadable. It wasn't like their usual tension during matches—it was something else. Something heavier.
So when Yuuto called out to him after practice, Renji knew this wasn't going to be a casual conversation.
"Stop holding back."
Renji blinked, confused. "What?"
Yuuto sighed, crossing his arms. "You're playing too carefully. You're hesitating, second-guessing." He stepped closer, lowering his voice. "It's because of her, isn't it?"
Renji's breath hitched.
Yuuto figured it out.
"Don't—" Renji started, but Yuuto cut him off.
"I don't care about your excuses. If you're gonna do something, then do it. If not, stop letting it mess with your head."
Renji clenched his fists.
This was so like Yuuto. Always direct. Always pushing.
Yuuto studied him for another second before turning away. "Figure it out, Renji. Before it gets worse."

The Attempt
Renji barely remembered walking out of the gym. His mind was still spinning from Yuuto's words.
Before he knew it, he was standing near the vending machines outside, and Asuka was there.
She was tying her hair back, her expression calm as she hummed to herself. The evening light made her look almost unreal—or maybe Renji was just seeing her differently now.
Yuuto's words echoed in his head.
Figure it out.
Renji took a deep breath.
"Asuka."
She looked up, blinking at him. "Yeah?"
His heart pounded. His pulse roared in his ears. Just say it. Just tell her.
Renji opened his mouth.
"I… I think you're amazing!"
Silence.
Asuka blinked again. Then, slowly, she grinned.
"Aww, Renji, that's sweet! You finally appreciate my manager skills, huh?"
Renji froze.
His brain shut down.
That's—wait—what?
Asuka patted his shoulder, completely unaware of the emotional chaos she just caused. "Took you long enough! I do work hard keeping you guys in line."
Renji nodded stiffly. "Y-yeah. That's… what I meant."
Asuka smiled, clearly pleased. "Glad to hear it! Now, let's get going before we get locked out of the dorms."
She walked ahead, completely unaware of the disaster that just unfolded.
Renji, on the other hand, stood frozen in place, internally screaming.

The Aftermath
Yuuto, leaning against a nearby tree, had watched the entire exchange.
He exhaled through his nose. "Idiot."
Shaking his head, he walked off, leaving Renji standing there—his first confession completely misinterpreted.
And the worst part?
He had no idea how to fix it.
