Chapter 4: The Mysterious Message
I showed the book to Alex, and he frowned, puzzled. "What do you think it means?" he asked.
I shook my head. "I'm not sure, but I think we need to look closer at the school's history."
Mrs. Jenkins, who had been quietly observing us, spoke up. "I think I can help you with that," she said. "There's an old legend about Ravenswood Academy, one that's been passed down through the years."
Alex and I exchanged a curious glance. "What legend?" Alex asked.
Mrs. Jenkins smiled, a mischievous glint in her eye. "The legend of the Summer Society," she said. "It's said that every summer, a group of students would gather in secret, bound by a shared oath to uncover the truth about the school's past."
I felt a shiver run down my spine. The Summer Society? It sounded like something out of a novel.
But Alex's eyes were gleaming with excitement. "Do you think it's real?" he asked Mrs. Jenkins.
She nodded. "I do," she said. "And I think you two might be the key to uncovering its secrets."
As we left the archives, I couldn't shake off the feeling that we were being watched. The Summer Society? The Order of the Raven? What other secrets lay hidden in the shadows of Ravenswood Academy?
And then, as we walked across the quad, I saw it. A piece of paper, tucked into the branches of a nearby tree. I pulled it out, and my heart skipped a beat.
It was a message, scrawled in the same handwriting as the one in the book:
"Meet me at the old oak at midnight. Come alone."
What did it mean? And who was behind it?
The figure stepped closer, and I saw that it was a girl about my age. She had long, curly brown hair and piercing green eyes.
"Who are you?" I asked, trying to keep my voice steady.
"My name is Emily," she replied. "And I'm a member of the Summer Society."
I felt a surge of excitement mixed with fear. "What's the Summer Society?" I asked.
Emily smiled. "We're a group of students who have dedicated ourselves to uncovering the truth about Ravenswood Academy's past."
I frowned. "What secrets?"
Emily leaned in closer. "Secrets about the school's founder, Malcolm Ravenswood. Secrets about the Order of the Raven."
My heart skipped a beat. "What do you know about the Order?" I asked.
Emily's eyes locked onto mine. "I know that they're still active today. And I know that they'll stop at nothing to keep their secrets buried."
Suddenly, I heard a rustling in the bushes nearby. Emily's eyes flicked towards the sound.
"We have to go," she whispered. "Now."
