"What's going on with you two? Whose bounty poster are you staring at like that?"
Noticing the expressions on their faces, Gol D. Roger furrowed his brows, stepping forward to take a look for himself.
"This is... a bounty from the Rocks Pirates?" Roger asked, his tone suddenly heavier.
"Yes," Jabba nodded, holding up the poster for Roger to see. "It's Ayr."
"Ayr's bounty has reached 3.5 billion berries?!"
Roger's eyes widened in disbelief as he stared at the number. The last time he saw Ayr's bounty, it was sitting at 2.5 billion. And now? A full billion increase?
He hadn't heard any recent reports about Ayr causing chaos in the seas. Why such a massive jump?
"I have no idea what that guy did," Jabba muttered, swirling the bottle in his hand. "But whatever it was... it must've rattled Marine HQ."
The Roger Pirates had sailed the seas for years. They'd crossed paths with the Marines on multiple occasions. And still, bounty increases like this were rare—typically incremental, no matter how intense the skirmish.
So how did Ayr's bounty jump by an entire billion?
"The Rocks Pirates are too damn unpredictable," Rayleigh added, calmly observing. "Whenever they do something major, it's never reported publicly."
"Like the Battle of Hive Island," Roger muttered.
"Exactly," Rayleigh nodded. "No newspapers covered it. But Ayr's bounty spiked from 1.5 billion to 2.5 billion after that battle. Now again… there's no news, but the number jumped."
"The only explanation," Rayleigh continued, "is that Ayr and the others must've done something huge—enough to shake Marineford. The kind of thing they'd rather keep secret from the public."
Roger let out a low whistle. "He's a wild one, that Ayr…"
Each time Ayr's name surfaced, it wasn't in whispers. It was with tremors. If the Marines refused to report his actions, that could only mean those actions were too big… too dangerous.
"It's not just Ayr," Jabba added, handing the stack of bounty posters to Roger. "The rest of the Rocks Pirates have jumped too."
Roger scanned through them:
Whitebeard – 4 Billion Berries
Golden Lion – 3.7 Billion
Charlotte Linlin – 3.4 Billion
Kaido – 650 Million
All of their bounties had skyrocketed. But Ayr's was the one that stood out the most. No doubt, whatever happened in Mariejois had been serious.
They continued to talk, mugs of sake in hand, but the mood was shifting. A tension loomed.
Then…
"Swoosh!"
The sound of waves crashing broke the moment.
"Crash!"
Roger, Rayleigh, and Jabba turned their heads sharply toward the sea.
A Marine warship was approaching fast, its bow cutting through the current like a blade.
"It's a Marine ship!" Jabba shouted. "Everyone—ready yourselves!"
Despite only one ship appearing, everyone on deck braced for combat. The Roger Pirates were too seasoned to lower their guard.
And if the Marines had the gall to approach them with only one ship… then someone important must be aboard.
Suddenly—
"Step! Step! Step!"
Figures walked through the air, Geppo-style, descending from above. They wore suits and masks, but bore no cloaks of justice.
"Those aren't Marines," Rayleigh said, narrowing his eyes.
"No… they're CP0," Roger added darkly. "The World Government's personal enforcers."
The Cipher Pol Aegis Zero, the most elite of the World Government's agents.
"World Government, huh?" Jabba growled. "This can't be good."
He raised his hand.
"Fire!"
The Roger Pirates' cannons swiveled into position, all trained on the hovering CP0 agents.
"Wait, wait!" one of the masked agents called out, hands raised. "We're here to talk—"
"Too late," Jabba snapped. "You brought a warship to our front door. That's provocation enough."
"Fire!!!"
"BOOM BOOM BOOM!!!"
Explosions filled the sky as cannonballs soared toward the CP0 agents. The agents deflected many with Armament Haki, slicing some shells mid-air.
But then—
"CLANG!"
Rayleigh appeared in an instant, his blade drawn, slashing with a wave of Conqueror's Haki-infused swordplay.
The air split open, and several CP0 agents were sent flying into the sea below.
"The World Government," Rayleigh said, calmly sheathing his sword, "has seriously underestimated us."
He landed softly on the deck, expression unshaken.
Roger watched him, then glanced back at the wreckage. "Something's off. I don't think they came here to fight."
"You felt it too?" Rayleigh said.
"Yeah. Their footwork was too controlled. Defensive. Like they didn't come for combat."
"Then what?" Jabba asked, puzzled.
On the drifting Marine warship, more CP0 agents leapt from the deck, voices raised in frustration.
"Hey! Are you crazy?! The World Government came to negotiate with you!"
"Negotiate?" Roger, Rayleigh, and Jabba said in unison.
The deck fell silent.
Even the crew paused, swords and rifles still raised. That one word had shifted the atmosphere.
The World Government, negotiating with pirates?
That only meant one thing…
Something was coming.
Something big.
