Chapter 8
Kierra's POV
"Deep breaths, Kierra. Deep breaths. You can do this. You can–" I was saying to myself until I was suddenly cut off by a loud, high pitched voice yelling, "Hey, waitress!"
I stifled a groan and forced myself to smile at my 'customers', Celine and her cheerleader friends. I could see an evil glint in her eyes and I could tell that this wasn't going to end well.
"What can I get for you, Miss?" I asked, my teeth clenched together. Celine leaned back in her chair and placed her hand on her chin.
"Hmmm... What can you get for us?"
Thirty minutes later, I was back at their table carefully placing their 'orders' in front of them. Each of the ten cheerleaders seated at the table had had specific orders and preferences that were important.
"Are you sure that there is soy milk in this?" Minnie, one of the cheerleaders was asking, holding up her cappuccino. I nodded wordlessly, already feeling drained from the constant trips back and forth to the kitchen.
"Did you tell the chef to cook the pizza exactly the way I told you?"
"Yes," I answered. "I'll be leaving now. Just call if you need anything." I turned to leave, happy to finally be away from Celine when I heard the sound of something hitting the floor. I turned to look and sure enough, my worst fears were confirmed.
Right beside Celine and just a few metres away from where I was standing was the pizza I'd just placed in front of her. The same one that had taken the chef forever to make because of the specifications they had had for it and yet, there it was, on the floor while Celine observed me with a devilish smile on her face.
"Oops! You'll have to forgive me. I'm a little clumsy," she said, looking completely innocent but we both knew the truth. Celine wasn't clumsy. She was just being a bitch.
Both my fists were balled tight by my side as I struggled to restrain myself from hitting her. As much as I wanted to, I couldn't do it. Hitting a customer would almost certainly cost me my job even if they deserved it like Celine.
I closed my eyes and counted to ten before opening my eyes and walking over to the pizza. I went on my knees to pick up the pizza and was about standing up when I suddenly felt something wet and cold hit my scalp.
The liquid started to flow from my scalp and coat my face and judging from the smell, it was a cola drink, the same one I remembered serving to Celine and two other girls.
I could hear them giggling and snickering and with each giggle, I could feel myself being pushed to the edge until I was close to losing it. All I needed was a little push and then she did it.
"Well, would you look at that? It looks like you'll have to get our orders all over again."
This, she said as she pushed the rest of the drinks and pizzas on the floor and on me. Blinded by my rage, I stood from the floor with one target in mind but before I could get to her, someone blocked my path.
Furious that I was stopped, I glanced up at the only barrier standing between me and Celine—and probably losing my job—ready to lash out at them but I felt all my anger quickly dissipate when I realized who'd stopped me.
"Oh, it's you," I said as I heaved a sigh of exhaustion.
"Yeah. Are you okay?" he asked, blue eyes full of concern. Despite just being furious a few minutes ago, I found myself smiling as I nodded. "I'm okay. What are you doing here, Ethan?"
"Well, what do people usually do here at Pizza Planet?"
"Eat pizzas, I guess."
"Well, there you have it. And it would seem that I came just in time," he remarked, fixing Celine and her crew a glare. Just watching him look at them like that because of me delighted me more than I thought possible and I couldn't resist grinning. "Anyway, do you want to get cleaned up?"
"Yeah. Yeah. I should probably do that." I was about to go to the bathroom when I was suddenly reminded of Celine's presence. If I left, she would probably have caused trouble for me by the time I came back.
However, as though he read my mind, Ethan said, "Go ahead and get cleaned up. Don't worry about these guys. I'll handle them."
My grin grew even wider when I saw Celine gulp and tremble just slightly after hearing Ethan's statement.
I skipped happily to the staff bathroom. I couldn't exactly wash my hair or change my outfit until I got home so I did my best to clean my hair to the best of my ability before packing it up into a ponytail and heading back to the main restaurant.
I was happy to observe that Celine and her crew were gone. I saw Ethan on the floor, trying to pack up the pizzas that had been tossed on the floor and rushed to him.
"Hey, don't worry about it," I said, getting down to my knees and attempting to grab the pizza in his hands but he was adamant.
"It's no big deal, Key."
"But Ethan, you're a customer. This is my job. My boss–"
"Can't do anything. I'm doing this of my own free will, okay? Now get me that tray over there."
Since I failed to stop him, I grabbed the trays and together we placed the pizzas on there and I left to dump them in the trash. After cleaning up the mess, I came back to take Ethan's order.
"I'll take a Coke," he said to me, a huge smile plastered on his face. I nodded and left to get his drink.
The rest of my shift passed by in a blur and it was mostly due to the presence of the cutie occupying a table by himself. He said he wanted to stay with me till the end of my shift and I, well, I wasn't one to complain.
And so, after the end of my shift, I stepped out of the pizza place with Ethan by my side. His car was just right ahead and as I was envisioning the ride ahead alone with him, I saw someone heading right towards and stopped in my tracks.
This couldn't be good.
