Chapter 60: Smoke and Shadows

---

1. Fire in the Sky

Jinwoo's world spun as the rooftop erupted into flames. The force of the explosion sent him hurtling backward, crashing into a metal railing. His ears rang, his vision blurred.

Through the smoke, he saw Baek Sung-min stumbling toward the edge of the building. Blood streamed down his face, his smirk gone—replaced by sheer desperation.

Jinwoo pushed himself up, ignoring the pain. His comms crackled.

"Jinwoo! What the hell happened?!" Hye-jin's voice was frantic.

"Someone rigged the rooftop," Jinwoo muttered, his breath ragged.

Dae-hyun's voice cut in. "We need to get out now! The whole building is going up!"

But Jinwoo wasn't leaving without answers. He lunged at Sung-min, grabbing his collar. "Who set this up?!"

Sung-min coughed, laughing weakly. "You still don't get it, do you?" His eyes burned with something Jinwoo couldn't place. Pity? Fear?

Jinwoo tightened his grip. "Talk."

Sung-min exhaled sharply, his body going limp. "The Architect… is already watching."

Jinwoo's blood ran cold. Already watching?

And then, Sung-min let himself fall.

Jinwoo reached out, but it was too late. Sung-min's body plummeted into the inferno below, vanishing in the sea of flames.

For a moment, all Jinwoo could do was stare.

Then, the rooftop beneath him gave way.

2. Desperate Escape

Jinwoo hit the lower floor hard, rolling to absorb the impact. Smoke filled his lungs, choking him. The entire building was collapsing.

His earpiece crackled. "JINWOO, WHERE ARE YOU?!"

"Falling through hell," he coughed. "Meet me at the exit."

He pushed forward, dodging falling debris. The walls groaned, the ceiling crumbling. Almost there.

A flaming beam crashed down in front of him, blocking the exit.

No time to think.

Jinwoo sprinted toward the nearest window, bracing himself. One shot.

He leaped.

Glass shattered around him as he crashed through, tumbling onto a nearby rooftop. The impact knocked the wind out of him, but he was alive.

Barely.

3. The Architect's Message

By the time Jinwoo staggered into the alley, Hye-jin and Dae-hyun were already waiting, a stolen black sedan running behind them.

"You look like hell," Dae-hyun muttered.

Jinwoo grinned, wiping blood from his forehead. "Hell's warm this time of year."

Hye-jin narrowed her eyes. "Where's Sung-min?"

Jinwoo hesitated. "Dead."

Hye-jin exhaled sharply. "So we got nothing."

"No." Jinwoo reached into his pocket, pulling out something he grabbed from Sung-min before he fell.

A burned playing card. The edges were charred, but the image was clear.

A black king.

Hye-jin's face paled. "That's…"

Dae-hyun swallowed. "The Architect's calling card."

A cold chill ran through Jinwoo.

Sung-min hadn't just fallen to his death.

This was a warning.

And The Architect was watching.
