Chapter 45: Unchained

The air in the safehouse was thick with the aftermath of something neither of them could name.

Shade sat at the edge of the bed, shirtless, hands gripping his temples, his breath uneven. His body was humming with something wrong. Something new.

Jade pulled the sheets around herself, watching him with cautious eyes. "Shade… talk to me."

Shade clenched his fists. "I lost control."

Jade exhaled. "Yeah. I noticed."

His pulse pounded. He could still feel the hunger—the raw, animalistic urge that had taken over when he touched her. He had been rough before, but never like that.

Jade moved toward him, hesitant. "You didn't hurt me."

Shade exhaled sharply. "Not this time."

Jade reached out, fingers grazing his arm. "You're still you."

Shade turned to her, his eyes darker than she had ever seen. "What if I'm not?"

Jade swallowed. "Then I'll fight for you."

Shade's jaw tightened. "You might have to fight against me."

Jade's heart ached at the rawness in his voice. But before she could respond—

The walls shook.

A distant boom rocked the building, followed by rapid gunfire.

Shade and Jade locked eyes.

They were out of time.
