Chapter 18: The Midnight Meeting
Emily's mind was racing as she tried to process the mysterious text. Who could be behind it? And what did they want?
Ben's eyes were locked onto hers. "We can't ignore this," he said. "We have to know what's going on."
Emily nodded, her heart pounding in her chest. "I'll go," she said. "Alone."
Ben's expression turned skeptical. "I don't think that's a good idea."
But Emily was resolute. "I have to do this," she said. "For my mother."
Ben sighed, but eventually nodded. "Okay. But be careful."
As the clock struck midnight, Emily made her way to the old oak tree in the park. The moon was full overhead, casting eerie shadows on the ground.
Suddenly, a figure emerged from the darkness. Emily's heart skipped a beat as she took in the familiar face.
It was Alex, Ben's brother.
But something was off. Alex's eyes seemed darker, more sinister.
"Emily," Alex said, his voice low and menacing. "I've been waiting for you."
Emily's instincts screamed at her to run, but her feet seemed rooted to the spot.
"What do you want?" Emily asked, trying to keep her voice steady.
Alex smiled, his eyes glinting in the moonlight. "I want to show you the truth," he said. "About your mother. About the Wrights."
Emily's heart was racing. What truth could Alex possibly reveal?
