Chapter 13: The Allure of Anemia?

Once again, the mention of the Morris family made Anran furrow her brows. Images of F4 bullying ordinary students popped into her head. Could it be like that?

"So… did you offend someone from the Morris family, and that's why no one wants to be friends with you?"

"N…no…" Zhang Ning shook her head nervously. "It's not like that."

So, it wasn't the "Boys Over Flowers" scenario she'd imagined. Then what was the reason?

"It's… I accidentally bumped into the student council president and fell… Then… he helped me up," Zhang Ning's voice grew softer as she mumbled, "The president… he's a very kind person."

This explanation caught Anran by surprise, completely overturning her earlier assumptions. So, the so-called Morris family member wasn't some spoiled brat but the student council president—likely a school celebrity. And the reason the girls ostracized Zhang Ning was downright laughable—pure jealousy.

Zhang Ning's cautious look suggested she was worried Anran might cut ties after hearing this. Anran found it amusing because, in her eyes, Zhang Ning colliding with the president wasn't a stroke of luck—it was bad luck!

Hearing no response from Anran, Zhang Ning grew increasingly uneasy, her disappointment growing.

"Anran, if… if you don't want to be friends anymore…"

Before Zhang Ning could finish, Anran gave her a firm pat on the back and said, "Don't be silly. Aren't we already friends?"

"Aren't you afraid they'll isolate you too?" Zhang Ning asked, surprised.

Anran didn't say a word, just raised an eyebrow at Zhang Ning. She couldn't care less about something so trivial.

Sometimes, words weren't necessary. Zhang Ning understood Anran's expression and smiled, finally letting go of her worries as they continued chatting.

Having made her first friend at the new school, Anran was in good spirits. After class, the two agreed to walk home together.

On their way, Anran asked Zhang Ning many questions about Rosetown, like the garlic flowers and crosses hanging at the doorways of houses.

Zhang Ning explained, "It's a tradition here. If someone in the family has anemia, the parents hang those things by the door. They're said to ward off illness."

"Anemia?" Anran perked up at the word, remembering the girls in PE class discussing it with excitement.

Zhang Ning nodded. "Recently, quite a few young people in town have developed anemia, even though they seemed perfectly healthy before."

"But… why do the girls in class wish they could get anemia?" Anran couldn't wrap her head around it. Was this some local custom? But it was such a strange one!

"It's… because the young people in Rosetown believe… having had anemia makes you more appealing," Zhang Ning whispered.

Hearing this, Anran rolled her eyes. What kind of logic was that? How could anemia make someone attractive? Images of pale faces and weak postures flashed through her mind. What kind of charm was that?

Seeing Anran's confusion, Zhang Ning added, "It's true. People who've had anemia were all healthy and attractive before. I don't know when this idea started, but… I've heard it since I first came to school."

Anran thought about Aixue's appearance—she was quite pretty. But linking anemia to charm? That was something Anran couldn't agree with. She instinctively shook her head.

Seeing this, Zhang Ning, afraid Anran didn't believe her, added, "It's true! Many who've had anemia can talk to those wearing purple uniforms. That's seen as a sign of charm."
