Mara hadn't expected jealousy to feel this way—like a slow, burning sensation in her chest, making it hard to focus on anything else.
At first, she thought she was imagining it.
Jace was her partner for the project, and they had spent so much time together, practicing their lines, adjusting their expressions, and perfecting their delivery.
She had every opportunity to have moments with him.
So why did it bother her so much when he looked at Lira like that?
She had caught him staring once, just a little too long. His lips curved up slightly, his eyes focused on Lira as she read through her lines. It was subtle, barely noticeable. But to Mara, it was everything.
And when Lira laughed at something Jace said, Mara felt her stomach twist.
No. This wasn't happening.
Lira wouldn't steal him, right?
But then, another thought crossed her mind.
What if Lira liked Jace too?
Mara swallowed the lump in her throat. She needed to do something.
Her gaze shifted to Zayn, who stood across the room, lazily leaning against a desk, arms crossed. He wasn't paying attention to the project at all. Instead, he was watching Jace and Lira.
His expression was unreadable, but something about the way his jaw tensed made Mara smirk.
Interesting.
Maybe Zayn wasn't as indifferent as he pretended to be.
And maybe… he could be useful.
That evening, as they all walked home after rehearsals, Mara saw the perfect opportunity.
With a bright smile, she casually looped her arm around Zayn's, tilting her head up at him.
"You're so quiet sometimes," she said, feigning curiosity. "It makes you seem mysterious."
Zayn raised an eyebrow, glancing down at her. "I thought you were too busy with Jace to care about me."
Mara giggled, acting unbothered. "Come on, I can't be curious about you too?"
She glanced to the side, just in time to see Lira stiffen slightly.
Perfect.
Jace, however, did not seem pleased.
"Mara," he said, voice firm. "What are you doing?"
Mara blinked up at him innocently. "What? Zayn and I are just talking."
Lira was silent, but Mara noticed the way she kept stealing glances at them.
Zayn smirked slightly, playing along. "Yeah, Jace. Just talking."
Jace's jaw tightened, and for a brief moment, Mara wondered if she had made a mistake.
But then, as they reached the street where they would split ways, she caught Lira sneaking one last look at her and Zayn before quickly looking away.
Mara smiled.
Step one of the plan? Complete.
To be continued…
