Chapter 12:Late-Night rehearsals

"Again."

Lira groaned, rubbing her temples. "Zayn, we've rehearsed this part five times already."

Zayn leaned against the classroom desk, his arms folded. "And we'll do it a sixth time until you stop hesitating on your lines."

Lira narrowed her eyes. "I'm not hesitating!"

Zayn smirked. "Then prove it."

She huffed and took her position again. Their skit was based on an old love story—one of a soldier and the woman he left behind during a war. Lira played the heartbroken girl, while Zayn played the distant yet passionate soldier.

The irony was almost laughable.

As they went through their lines, Lira found it harder to focus. Zayn was just too close. His intense gaze, the way he delivered his lines—it made her feel things she didn't want to admit.

By the time they finished, Lira was breathless.

Zayn tilted his head. "See? That was better."

She rolled her eyes. "Whatever."

Just as she was about to pack up, Jace walked in.

"You guys still here?" he asked, walking over. "Mara and I finished like an hour ago."

Lira frowned. "An hour ago? You guys left school late?"

Jace shrugged. "Mara wanted to keep practicing. She's really into this."

Zayn snorted. "She's into something, alright."

Jace shot him a look, but before anyone could say anything else, Mara peeked into the classroom.

"Oh, you guys are still here?" she asked, looking surprised. But something flickered in her eyes when she saw Jace standing next to Lira.

For a second, Lira thought she saw jealousy.
