Chapter Nine -- It is quite infuriating that you wasted your life.
Poppy walked out of the room and she covered her face with her hands. Markovic had a way of getting under her skin and she hated it so much, this was just their second session and he was already making a fool of her. The way he looked at her, the expression he had on his face when she asked about Nihilism and Absurdism, the smile he had, the way her body reacted. She felt so overstimulated and exhausted.
She saw him twice a week, it was Friday, and she would be seeing him next on Monday, she could leave or she could go back there and drain him of all the information he was willing to tell her.
"Here." Agent Reed handed her a bottle of water, she unscrewed the cap and drank as much as she could, then she leaned against the wall.
"You can leave if you want, Dr. Ellis, you have made more progress than we thought was possible in just a day." He said softly and she nodded, she could leave, she knew she could leave, but the way Markovic told her to take some minutes off felt so domestic, so rude, she could not describe it.
"Dr. Ellis, I tried to get in touch with you while you were in there, only to realize you did not take your ear plugs." Agent Patel said and Poppy nodded, and she checked her wrist watch and realized she had few more minutes, but she didn't have to adhere to the time he set for her.
"Why did you take your ear plugs off? That is the only way we can get in touch with you and there are certain questions that we need you to ask from him." Agent Patel said, and Poppy looked at her "How about you do it yourself?" She snapped, she was tethering on the edge of a very high cliff, and she was not going to stand for someone to push her further down.
"Excuse me?" Agent Patel frowned, and Poppy nodded "You seem to have so much to say and ask, so why don't you walk in there and ask Markovic Pierce yourself." She gestured and Agent Patel shifted on her feet "He won't respond."
"Exactly, this is my job, not yours. So, focus on yours, and I will focus on mine. Don't try to teach me my job, don't try to tell me what to ask, or what to say, don't try to control me in the room. I am doing all I can and come on, this is just Markovic and I second session, be patient, you will get your answers in due time."
__
"You are back." Markovic said as she walked into the room and she nodded "I am back." She sat down and stared at the file, she had lost her bearing, she was confused and exhausted, the break did not make her feel any better. She looked at him and he was waiting for her, so she repeated the question she asked him.
"You graduated with honors from Harvard Law, you are an extremely smart person, you are obviously intelligent, you are also more knowledgeable than some would think, and yet you murdered forty six people. Your philosophical believe is supposedly existentialism, which expresses that our individual purpose is not given to us by God, Governments, Teachers or other Authorities. Existentialism understands personal freedom, individual responsibility and deliberate choice which is essential in the pursuit of self discovery and the determination of life's meaning. Does it justify murder?"
"This question holds anger, so, why are you angry?" He asked, and she looked at the ceiling, why was she angry?
"If you lie to me, Poppy, I will lie to you, too." He added and she looked at him, eye wide, she was shocked by his statement. She got up and paced the room, there was no reason to lie.
"It is quite infuriating that you wasted your life." She admitted and he raised an eyebrow "Wasted my life? Care to elaborate, Dr. Ellis?" He asked, this was the first time he didn't call her Poppy, she pushed that aside and thought about his question.
She walked to table and spread out his file, trying to find the one about his background information.
"You are thirty-three years old, Markovic Pierce. You were born in Russia, so you are a Russian citizen, but you grew up in America, also making you an American citizen. You grew up in Harlem, you were the only son, but you have two sisters - Grace and Sara, your parents - Mr. Aaron Pierce and Mrs. Victory Cole-Pierce." She gauged his reaction as she read on.
"Grace is thirty years old and she works at the Hospital, she is a Gynecologist, Sara is twenty-seven years old and she works in a big Tech firm, she is unmarried, but currently dating Marshall Briggs, who was your best friend for a couple of years, they live together in Beverly Hills. Grace is married, and she has been married for the past two years to Victor Vale, and they adopted a little girl a year ago, her name is Aliyah. Your mother donates to a lot of foundations, and your dad hosts a cooking every weekend for the homeless, he works at a bank and she works in a nurse, which probably inspired Grace's career path." She expressed and Markovic clenched his jaw and said nothing.
He didn't look at her either, he knew what she was trying to do, but he would not give her any satisfaction, he shut down his mind, too and prevented his thought from wandering.
"Your sisters went to very expensive school, and you went to Harvard Law which is just as expensive, but difficult to enter, but you did, and you graduated with honors, you worked at a Law Firm, you won a lot of cases, you were on the right path, you did everything right, until you decided to waste your life. You had so much opportunity that people would kill for, you had a good life, and you wasted it, that is why I am angry." She raged, losing herself once more.
