The Escape

The hospital corridors were quiet, too quiet. It was past midnight, and most of the staff had retreated to their stations. Evelyn stood beside Luca's bed, her heart pounding as she watched him, his face pale under the dim lighting.

Julian stood by the door, keeping watch. "We need to go now," he whispered.

Luca stirred, his hazel eyes barely open. "Eve…" His voice was hoarse.

"Shh," Evelyn soothed, brushing her fingers against his cheek. "We're getting you out of here."

Luca's brows furrowed in confusion, but exhaustion kept him from arguing.

Julian pulled out a wheelchair. "We do this fast and quiet. We can't afford another attack."

Evelyn helped Luca sit up, his body trembling from the effort. His wound was still fresh, and moving him felt cruel, but staying here was worse.

Julian pushed the wheelchair into the hallway. Evelyn walked beside them, her hand gripping the knife in her pocket. Every shadow felt like a threat.

As they reached the emergency exit, Evelyn's stomach dropped. Two men stood by the doors, dressed as security guards—but their posture was too rigid, too alert.

"They're waiting for us," she whispered.

Julian cursed under his breath. "Plan B?"

"There is no Plan B," Evelyn said, adjusting her grip on her knife. "We either fight or we lose him."

Julian sighed, rolling his shoulders. "Alright, let's make it quick."

Before the men could react, Evelyn lunged. Her knife sliced through the air, catching the first man in the arm. He grunted, stumbling back.

Julian took down the second man with a swift kick, grabbing his gun before he could reach for it. "Go!" he shouted.

Evelyn grabbed the wheelchair, pushing Luca through the doors as Julian covered them. The night air was crisp, but there was no time to breathe.

A black car was waiting by the curb. The driver—a woman Evelyn barely recognized—threw open the doors.

"Get in!" she yelled.

Julian jumped into the passenger seat while Evelyn helped Luca into the back. As soon as she was inside, the car sped off into the darkness.

Evelyn's hands trembled as she touched Luca's face. "We're safe now."

But Luca, eyes half-lidded, murmured something that sent ice through her veins.

"No, we're not."
