The car sped through the empty streets, headlights slicing through the darkness. The air inside was thick with tension—Evelyn could hear Luca's ragged breathing beside her, feel the weight of Julian's gaze from the front seat.
She clutched Luca's hand, her fingers tight around his. "What do you mean we're not safe?" she asked, voice barely above a whisper.
Luca's head lolled to the side, his face pale from blood loss. His lips parted, but his words were weak. "They're tracking us…"
Evelyn's stomach clenched. "How?"
Julian turned sharply. "What did they do to you in that hospital, Luca?"
Luca exhaled, his eyelids fluttering. "Not the hospital…" His voice was barely audible now. "Before that…"
Evelyn's heart pounded. "He's burning up," she whispered, pressing her palm against Luca's forehead.
Julian cursed. "If they're tracking him, that means we have to ditch the car. We need somewhere safe to regroup."
The driver, the woman Evelyn barely knew, glanced at them through the rearview mirror. "Safe doesn't exist anymore," she muttered.
Julian shot her a sharp look. "Who the hell are you, anyway?"
The woman didn't answer immediately. She took a sharp turn down a deserted alley, the tires screeching against the pavement. Then, finally, she spoke.
"My name's Rayna," she said. "And if you want to survive the next twelve hours, you're going to listen to me."
The car skidded to a stop in front of an abandoned warehouse. Rayna killed the engine and turned to face them. "Get inside. Now."
Evelyn hesitated, glancing at Luca, whose breathing was shallow. He needed help—real medical help. But what choice did they have?
Julian was already out of the car, gun in hand. "Let's move."
Evelyn helped Luca out, wrapping her arm around his waist as they stumbled toward the building. The warehouse loomed before them, its broken windows like hollow eyes in the night.
As soon as they stepped inside, Rayna slammed the door shut behind them.
Then she turned to face them, eyes dark and unreadable. "There's something you don't know," she said. "And you're running out of time to figure it out."
Evelyn swallowed hard. "What do you mean?"
Rayna exhaled. "Luca's not the only one they're tracking."
