Chapter 5

"Who killed my daughter? And who ordered the doctor and that lunatic to do this to her?!"

Brent was taken aback for a moment, then frowned. "What nonsense are you talking about? Everyone saw that madman rush up and kill Melody. You fainted and didn't see her die on the spot."

"What kind of insanity are you committing now, pinning this crime on Genevieve? Injuring her knee to avenge Melody? You're being utterly unreasonable!"

Genevieve then pretended to be gracious and said, "We're all mothers with daughters. Considering the pain of losing a child, let's not hold this against her. It's just that my knee hurts so much. I hope it's not fractured, Brent. I'm really scared."

Brent crouched down, carefully examining the knee that showed no signs of injury, and coldly stared at me. "Seraphina, apologize to her!"

"I won't!"

Brent directly pressed his hand on my shoulder, forcing me down with a hard push, making me kneel heavily before her.

"You'll kneel whether you want to or not!"

Genevieve displayed a long-absent smile, smug and provocative.

I gritted my teeth as I watched them leave, slowly picking up Melody's ashes.

Melody, let's go. I stood at the roadside, printing out a copy of the divorce agreement when Brent called me again.

"Seraphina, I'm sorry. Your foot should be fine, right? I only made you apologize so Genevieve wouldn't hate you. I'd like to say sorry on her behalf."

"Also, keep Melody's ashes for now. A spiritual advisor said spreading Melody's ashes on a road would bring prosperity to the family and it's eco-friendly too."

"Seraphina, I'll make it up to you when I get back. I'll buy your favorite cake."

I responded emotionlessly, "Oh."

"Thank you for forgiving Genevieve. Seraphina, you're so good, just as obedient as Melody. I'll bring home the sweets you like."

I didn't reply further, hastily bandaging the wound on my knee and packing up my things.

I set a time to send Brent the divorce papers and recordings.

In the airport lounge, I still caught sight of their news.

Because of Genevieve's foot injury, Brent had called in a world-renowned orthopedic surgeon just to check if Genevieve's knee was hurt.

To cheer Genevieve up, he gifted her a top-tier gemstone and even wanted to make Scarlett his goddaughter.

I resolutely boarded the plane, holding Melody's casket close.

Brent was holding Genevieve, kissing her and massaging her knee, causing Genevieve to let out a series of soft moans.

The doctor rushed over and whispered urgently in his ear:

"It's terrible, your wife has disappeared, leaving behind a paternity test showing Genevieve's daughter isn't your child, and her knee joint was never damaged!"

"What!"

Brent read and re-read the paternity test over and over.

Genevieve curled up in his arms like a kitten: "What's going on? Hurry and put this beautiful jewel on me. Scarlett, why aren't you calling Daddy?"

Scarlett was closer to the doctor and only heard the beginning. She tugged on Brent's hand, whining: "Who cares if Seraphina's gone, Dad. Don't worry, Mom and I will keep you company from now on."

Genevieve's delicate hand crept up Brent's neck: "That's right, no matter what happens, we'll always be by your side. We'll be together forever!"

The color drained from Brent's face.
