My Future

Later that night, Kikidori sat on his bed, flipping through his phone while Haruna stretched out on hers, lazily swishing her tail. The dorm room was quiet except for the hum of the air conditioner and the occasional mew from Haruna whenever she stretched a little too far.

"Man, today was wild," she said, rolling onto her stomach and propping herself up on her elbows. "I still can't believe you let me lick your neck."

Kikidori groaned. "I didn't let you. You just did it."

She grinned. "A dare's a dare, Kiki~."

He sighed, shaking his head. "You're ridiculous."

Haruna smirked. "And yet, you love having me around."

He couldn't argue with that.

For a while, they just sat in comfortable silence. Haruna absentmindedly flicked her tail, and Kikidori scrolled through random videos.

Then, out of nowhere, Haruna spoke up.

"Kiki."

He glanced at her. "Yeah?"

She hesitated for a second, her ears twitching. "Do you ever think about… what comes after high school?"

Kikidori blinked. That was not what he expected.

"I mean," she continued, rolling onto her back and staring at the ceiling, "we've been together since forever, right? Daycare, elementary, middle, now high school… but what happens after? College? Jobs? Life?"

Kikidori put his phone down, actually thinking about it. He never really liked thinking too far ahead, but now that she brought it up…

"Honestly? I don't know," he admitted. "I mean, I guess college is the next step, but…"

"But what if we get separated?" she finished for him.

A weird, uncomfortable silence filled the air. Kikidori hadn't even considered that. The idea of not having Haruna around? Waking up in a dorm without her dumb little meows? No random tail flicks smacking him while she stretched? No more stupid dares or weird conversations?

It felt wrong.

Haruna sighed. "It's kinda scary, huh?"

Kikidori nodded slowly. "Yeah… it is."

Haruna was quiet for a second before she suddenly sat up, grinning. "Then let's promise something!"

He raised an eyebrow. "Promise what?"

She held out her pinky. "No matter what happens, we stick together. Even if we end up in different colleges or different cities or whatever… we don't lose each other. Deal?"

Kikidori stared at her pinky, then at her face. She was dead serious, despite the playful smirk.

He felt something warm in his chest.

With a small smile, he linked his pinky with hers. "Deal."

Haruna beamed. "Good. Now, let's stop talking about the future before I have an existential crisis."

Kikidori laughed. "Agreed."

Haruna flopped back onto her bed, her tail flicking lazily. "So… can I have the last pudding in the fridge?"

Kikidori scoffed. "Hell no."

She gasped. "You traitor."

He smirked. "Pinky promises don't cover food."

Haruna groaned dramatically. "This is why people say you're heartless, Kiki."

He chuckled, shaking his head. "And yet, you still love having me around."

She grinned. "Damn right."

And just like that, the weird, heavy conversation was gone, replaced by their usual nonsense.

And honestly? Kikidori wouldn't have it any other way.
