The Weight of a Choice

Liam sat in the dimly lit chamber of the Silver Veil guildhall, his fingers resting on the worn wooden table. Across from him, Vance Eldrin smiled as he swirled a glass of amber liquid.

"You look tense," Vance said, his voice smooth, calculated. "I assume it's because you still don't know if you should accept my offer?"

Liam exhaled. A day ago, he had been nothing—a rejected Architect, a background character in a world of warriors and mages. Now, he had killed an A-rank monster and stood at the crossroads of something far bigger than himself.

"Why are you helping me?" Liam asked. "What does the Silver Veil want from me?"

Vance chuckled. "Straight to the point. I like that." He leaned forward. "You have a talent that defies common sense. The ability to create. No one has seen anything like it before. That makes you... valuable."

Liam narrowed his eyes.

Vance's offer sounded tempting, but Liam had learned the hard way—nothing in this world was free.

Before he could respond, the door swung open.

"Liam!"

A familiar voice.

He turned to see Iris rushing into the room, her silver hair flowing behind her. The healer-in-training skidded to a stop, glancing at Vance warily before focusing on Liam.

"You're not seriously thinking of joining them, are you?" she asked.

Vance raised an eyebrow. "And why wouldn't he?"

Iris clenched her fists. "Because guilds like yours only see people as tools! They'll use Liam and throw him away the moment he's no longer useful!"

Liam felt something tighten in his chest.

He had felt like a tool his whole life—discarded, overlooked, worthless.

But now, he had power.

The question was… who would he trust to guide him?

Vance smirked, swirling his drink again. "Then tell me, dear healer. Where else should he go?"

Iris hesitated. "He... he could come with me."

Silence.

Then Vance laughed. "Come with you? To do what? Patch up wounded adventurers for a few coins? Liam, you have potential beyond menial work. Don't waste it."

Liam's heart pounded.

His mind raced between two paths.

Iris, his friend, someone he could trust. Or Vance, the man offering him a chance at something greater.

Whatever he chose… there was no turning back.
