The City's Wrath

The first Sentinel moved with an unnatural speed, its elongated stone arm lashing out like a spear. Liam barely dodged, twisting at the last second as the ground exploded beneath the impact.

Too fast. Too strong.

Iris rolled to the side, her dagger useless against creatures that didn't have flesh to cut. Ileana fired another arrow, but the projectile shattered mid-air, just like before.

"These things are immune to physical attacks!" Ileana snarled, already backing toward the water's edge.

Liam's ink flickered in his grip, his mind racing. His runes had dissolved before, but maybe—

He dragged his brush through the air, drawing a gravity repulsion sigil, forcing ink to burn brighter than before. The rune flared to life—then cracked.

Liam's stomach twisted.

His ink—his power—was being rejected by the city itself.

The fortress doors pulsed behind them, the runes carved into their surface glowing brighter. And then—

A cold dread settled in Liam's bones.

They weren't meant to be here.

And these Sentinels?

They were here to make sure they left.

An Unwinnable Fight

"Liam!" Iris's shout snapped him out of his thoughts. He turned just in time to see three Sentinels lunging—their stone arms stretching unnaturally, jagged fingers reaching for him.

Liam jumped back, but one clipped his side. A sharp crack of pain shot through his ribs as he hit the ground, gasping.

Ileana was moving already, yanking him up before another strike could land. "We need to go. Now."

He barely managed a nod.

Iris had already darted toward the flooded tunnel they had fallen through, her body moving on pure instinct. "Hurry the hell up!"

But the Sentinels weren't letting them go so easily.

The moment Liam and Ileana made a break for the exit, the Sentinels shifted—their forms dissolving into shadows, then reappearing ahead of them in a blur of motion.

"They can teleport?!" Iris snarled.

A Sentinel's arm lashed out. Iris barely ducked, but its second limb split apart, forming sharp, shifting spikes that slammed toward her like a closing trap.

Liam didn't think—he reacted.

His brush flashed, dragging an unstable burst sigil mid-air. The ink flared violently, overloading, and the force sent both Iris and the Sentinel flying apart.

It wasn't perfect. But it gave them an opening.

The City's Verdict

The fortress doors pulsed one last time. The cavern rumbled, and Liam felt something unseen pressing against his mind.

A voice? No, a presence.

A message appeared in his status window, cold and absolute:

[The Lost City Has Rendered Judgment.]

[Unworthy. Leave or Be Destroyed.]

The cavern's waters began to churn violently, as if the city itself was forcing them out. The tunnel they had fallen through was no longer still—it was a raging vortex.

Ileana's sharp eyes took it all in. "The current—" she started. Then she grabbed Liam's arm. "That's our only way out!"

Liam barely had time to process her words before a Sentinel appeared right behind them, its form twisting unnaturally, jagged fingers stretching to impale him.

Iris acted on instinct.

She shoved Liam forwardhard.

Liam stumbled, his body careening into the vortex

And then the water swallowed him whole.
