The current was a monster.
Liam's body twisted violently as the vortex dragged him upward, its force overwhelming. Water roared around him, a chaotic surge that threatened to tear him apart. His lungs burned—his body screamed for air.
He couldn't fight it.
So he stopped struggling.
He let the current take him, limbs lose, mind racing. Through the churning water, he saw Iris and Ileana ahead, their bodies flung upward just like his own.
Above them—light. The cavern's exit.
Almost there.
But then—
The Sentinels didn't let them go.
Chased by Shadows
A dozen Sentinels stood at the edge of the collapsing ruins, their glowing eyes locked onto the escaping intruders. The fortress behind them pulsed one last time, and then—
The Sentinels moved.
They didn't walk. They glided.
Through the water.
Liam's eyes widened in horror. The creatures were still following them, shifting through the currents as if the water didn't exist.
Ileana noticed them first. "Liam—behind us!"
He turned just in time to see three Sentinels closing in, their limbs stretching into razor-sharp tendrils.
No time.
Liam's hand snapped forward, ink flaring. A desperate, last-ditch barrier rune formed in the water, rippling with unstable energy. The moment the Sentinels touched it—
Boom!
The water exploded, sending a shockwave through the current. The Sentinels reeled back for a moment—just enough for Liam to break through the surface.
Air.
Liam gasped, lungs burning as he broke free from the vortex. The force of the water threw him upward, flinging him out of the underground lake and onto solid ground.
He hit the stone hard, coughing violently. A second later, Iris and Ileana landed beside him, equally winded.
But they weren't safe yet.

The City Closes Its Gates
The ruins rumbled beneath them. The water behind them surged, rising unnaturally, s if the city itself was sealing off the path.
The last thing Liam saw before the entrance collapsed—
The Sentinels had stopped.
They stood at the edge of the sinking ruins, their glowing eyes still locked on him.
Waiting.
Not chasing.
Watching.
Then—darkness swallowed the city whole. The tunnel caved in, the entrance collapsed, and the water settled into silence.
The Lost City was gone.
The Architect's Judgment
Liam lay on his back, his heart pounding in his chest. Every muscle in his body screamed in exhaustion. But more than that—his mind spun.
They had been allowed to leave.
Not spared. Not ignored.
Allowed.
As if the city had chosen to let them go.
And then, as his vision blurred, his status window flickered to life one last time.
[Warning: The Architect's Legacy Has Not Yet Been Claimed.]
[You Will Be Tested Again.]
Liam's breath hitched.
He didn't have time to process it.
His body finally gave in.
And as the world faded to black, he heard distant voices approaching.
Hunters were coming.
And they weren't going to let him rest.
