Synopsis

WSA ENTRY~~

Humanity lives under an unseen rule—the Ascension Cycle. A hidden system selects individuals at random, forcing them to complete tasks and gain different abilities as a reward. Anyone who fails a mission assigned by the system will instantly die on the spot.

Ronan Vale wasn’t chosen at random.

Killed on a mission gone wrong, he wakes up with a system unlike any other:

[Evolution Path: Kill to Survive]

[Failure to Execute: Life Force Erosion Begins]

Ronan has only one way to stay alive—which is to obey every mission assigned to him by the system. Unlike others, Ronan evolves after every task, each kill makes him stronger, sharper....but less human.

As he fights to survive, he realizes his system is different. It evolves with him. It whispers to him. And it may not be just a tool—but a living thing.

As war brews between Harbingers—those who embrace the system—and Eradicators, who seek to destroy it, Ronan is caught in the middle. But he has no time for their games.

Because the real question isn’t how to survive.

But what he’ll become in the process. A heartless monster bred only for destruction? he was about to find out.

There are many things I could say about this novel, but I'd like to talk about my foremost points as if I were selling it to you. That's kind of what a review is, anyway. There are SO many system novels that plague this forum. I do not envy fans of the genre, I imagine it's like holding your hands out in the ocean hoping that a pretty seashell will be swept up into your palms... but this was honestly quite interesting. The world is presented as many others of the system genre are, a world that is suddenly endowed with the presence of intense and amazing powers, gifting people with superhuman capabilities. But there's one key trait that separated this from all the others from the very start: no one really wants to be gifted these abilities. This is because once a person is allowed to face their own claim of power, they have to first offer up their life in a deadly gamble. And this is something they have no choice over, it is only chance. One day, they might just be faced with their own opportunity to vie for power, but also battle against the risk of death. That is what intrigued me the most. We all run the risk every day of being hit by a car as we walk along the sidewalk, or be robbed and killed going home. None of us do this as we seek reward, but because it is simply the life we live. This element of a 'system being presented as a basic element of reality' was seamless in my head, it wasn't something inherently special, it was something unlucky, but also just part of life. The main character, Ronan, was offered many 'human' elements to his character that could later be masterfully paralleled by just how 'inhuman' he could become. The author's characterisation and how they apply it to the actual story is wonderful. And, as a matter of indulgence, many of the action scenes are packed with... ah, 'aura farming', for a lack of a better descriptor. Just so many cool moments that make you kick your feet up and down out of excitement, or something similar... I really recommend giving this novel a try, if only to free yourself from the repetition of the genre, for once...
