“DON’T SAY NO again,” Murry cut him off with a quick whisper, his voice thin with urgency. “Two in one day, and Octnavin’s head might explode.”

Sloan snickered, a muffled laugh.

“I’ll go with you.” Pete took a protective step in front of Nigel, as if shielding him from harm. “Just a little way. I vowed to love, honor, and protect you.”

Suddenly, Pete snagged Nigel around the waist and, with surprising strength, tugged him toward the lake. Pete reminded him so much of his mum. Elspeth would railroad him into stuff, too.

As far as Nigel was concerned, going toward the water was the absolute wrong direction. Shouldn’t they assess what these “dire consequences” were first? What if there was something in the lake that would pull him under? Could Nebos drown Dagerstanteens?
