Chapter 66: A human to love.
A SMILE BLOOMED on Pete’s lips, wide and genuine.
“I know this might not make sense to you, but I needed to know that. I’m happy to know that your parents were in love. I wanted to hear that Elspeth wasn’t forced. Does that make sense?” Pete moved toward the worn suitcase, his tentacle tracing a slow path over its scarred lid, a soft, almost reverent touch. “I always thought that coercing a human to be with one of us is wrong. At home, I would always say that when I got a human, I would make sure they loved me before I brought them to the palace.”
Nigel was used to Pete’s endless chatter, the constant stream of nattering observations and declarations. He nodded, already moving toward the east exit. It was time for them to head up and begin another round of “Pete-not-pinning-him.” The day was getting away from them, and they still needed to check the roof for drop snakes.
He hoped nothing unpleasant was waiting up there for them.
