Chapter 10: The Grandmaster's Public Embarrassment and the Master Disciple Duo's Lost Stipend
Just as Douluo Guang Ling soared into the sky, carrying Han Li and the other child in his arms, two figures stepped down from a carriage at the gates of Nuoding City. They were none other than Tang San and his teacher, Yu Xiaogang, returning from obtaining Tang San's first soul ring.
Due to Yu Xiaogang's injuries, a journey that should have taken a week had been dragged out to ten days. Even now, his complexion remained pale, and he still walked with a slight limp.
As he instructed Tang San to head to the Spirit Hall for soul master certification and to claim his stipend, a commotion from the crowd interrupted them.
"Look up at the sky! That seems to be a person. Could some important figure be visiting Nuoding City?"
Hearing this, both Tang San and Yu Xiaogang instinctively looked up. Tang San even activated his Purple Demon Eyes, taking in the scene above.
"There are three people one adult carrying two children. He has ice blue wings and a Spirit Hall insignia on his robes," Tang San described, then turned to his teacher with curiosity. "Teacher, do you know who that is?"
Yu Xiaogang was startled, then quickly asked, "Xiao San, are there any other distinguishing features?"
Tang San thought for a moment before replying uncertainly, "His hair is silver, and he has a blue scar on the left side of his face."
"I've heard from Bi " Yu Xiaogang suddenly stopped mid sentence, quickly adjusting his words. "I've heard that, based on your description, he should be one of Spirit Hall's enshrined elders Douluo Guang Ling, a Super Douluo of at least rank 95."
Why is he here?
As if something had clicked in his mind, Yu Xiaogang's expression changed. Grabbing Tang San's arm with urgency, he asked, "Wait, Xiao San, you said he was carrying two children?"
Tang San, still processing the shock from his teacher's response, winced slightly at the tight grip. Subtly pulling his arm free, he replied, "Yes, he was carrying two children. Teacher, did something come to mind?"
"Come with me to the Spirit Hall. They actually hid such an important matter from me!"
Yu Xiaogang ignored Tang San's question, turning immediately towards Spirit Hall in a hurry, his face dark with anger. Even the pain from his injuries seemed to diminish in his frustration.
Seeing his teacher so full of energy, Tang San swallowed back the words he had intended to say and simply followed.
Before long, the two arrived at the entrance of Nuoding City's Spirit Hall, only to find an unusually lively scene. The entrance, usually quiet, was now filled with a bustling crowd, with people congratulating two familiar figures Matthew Nuo and Su Yuntao. Some even handed them gifts.
No need to ask the two quickly pieced things together just from the murmurs of the onlookers.
Han Li, the young master Han, was not merely an innate rank seven spirit power talent as previously rumored, but an innate full spirit power genius. The commotion earlier had been caused by him.
A titled Douluo from Spirit Hall had come in person to take him as a disciple. Nuoding City had finally produced a true dragon.
Matthew Nuo and Su Yuntao, who had already been close to Han Li, naturally saw their status rise. Even the city lord's estate had received gifts from those wishing to curry favor. After all, different social classes had different ways of navigating power structures.
Some noticed Yu Xiaogang's arrival and nodded in greeting, though none approached him closely. After more than a decade in Nuoding City, his identity was well known though often mocked in private, people at least maintained a surface level respect. After all, he bore the Yu surname and was still a rank 29 Grandmaster.
Matthew Nuo and Su Yuntao also noticed Yu Xiaogang and gave him a slight nod out of courtesy. Though their relationship was not exactly friendly, they had interacted plenty over the years especially since Yu Xiaogang had received financial support from Spirit Hall.
However, neither expected Yu Xiaogang to walk straight up to them, his tone sharp and accusatory.
"Why did you hide Han Li's talent from me? Why didn't you inform me?"
Yu Xiaogang's voice was loud enough for everyone to hear. The lively atmosphere fell silent in an instant.
Matthew Nuo was momentarily stunned before a surge of anger rose within him, completely erasing his earlier good mood.
"Mind your tone, Yu Xiaogang. Do you even realize who you're speaking to?"
"When did Spirit Hall's affairs become any of your concern, Blue Lightning Tyrant Dragon Clan member?"
"And you expect us to notify you? Who do you think you are the Pope?"
Publicly reprimanded, Yu Xiaogang's face turned bright red with shame and fury. His fists clenched tightly. "Matthew Nuo, I recall instructing you to notify me if any talented soul masters appeared. You agreed to this!"
Matthew Nuo sneered. "Yu Xiaogang, are you delusional? First, Han Li is my relative. Even if he weren't, I would never entrust a promising child to you."
"Secondly, this is my duty. Let me remind you, you are not a part of Spirit Hall you bear the Yu surname. Thirdly, your so called Ten Core Competencies of Martial Souls you and I both know exactly what it is. And lastly, I never promised you anything."
"If you had any self respect left, you'd focus on teaching at Nuoding Academy instead of leeching off us. And from this day forward, as long as I remain in charge, Nuoding City's Spirit Hall will no longer provide you with any stipends. I will personally report this decision to higher authorities I'll bear all consequences."
"And count me in."
Su Yuntao stepped forward, supporting the trembling Matthew Nuo and adding in a cold voice, "You… are a disgrace."
"You… you !"
Yu Xiaogang trembled violently, his injuries not yet fully healed. Overcome with rage, he lost consciousness.
Tang San quickly caught his teacher before he could collapse. However, his gaze toward Matthew Nuo and Su Yuntao was now ice cold.
"A teacher for a day is a father for life."
These two had publicly humiliated his teacher they were courting death.
And then there was Han Li.
Like him, Han Li was innate full spirit power, yet simply because his martial soul was Blue Silver Grass, Spirit Hall had treated him completely differently.
Had it not been for his teacher, he wouldn't even have been able to acquire a proper soul ring.
Today's humiliation… will be repaid tenfold in the future.
Su Yuntao finally noticed Tang San, pausing in confusion.
Wait wasn't this the innate full spirit power Blue Silver Grass kid he had awakened?
Why was he with Yu Xiaogang?
Then he noticed Tang San's Nuoding Academy uniform and understood.
With a serious expression, Su Yuntao advised, "Kid, stay away from him. Just focus on training with your academy instructors."
Tang San cast them both a cold glare. Supporting Yu Xiaogang with his shoulder, he raised his right hand a single yellow soul ring materialized above his head.
"You needn't worry about me. And for the record, the 'fraud' you speak of is my teacher. Following his theory, I have successfully acquired a beast type soul ring."
"Hmph. Spirit Hall… is nothing special after all. I will remember today's slander against my teacher. You can also cancel my soul master stipend I don't need it."
With that, he walked away, carrying Yu Xiaogang toward Nuoding Academy under the watchful eyes of the crowd.
Su Yuntao opened his mouth to say something, but Matthew Nuo stopped him with a shake of his head. "Forget it. No point arguing with a child. He'll realize the truth one day."
Su Yuntao muttered, "I wasn't going to argue. I was just going to tell him that plant type martial souls absorbing beast type soul rings isn't unheard of. He should really go study his basics again."
Matthew Nuo chuckled. The cheerful mood was gone, though.
Bidding farewell to the crowd, he and Su Yuntao returned to Spirit Hall. The bystanders, sensing the show was over, also began to disperse, leaving only whispers behind.
