Chapter 3

But hearing it directly from Zoran's mouth, I couldn't help but feel a wave of dizziness wash over me. I tried desperately to breathe, but it felt like I couldn't get any oxygen, only a suffocating discomfort.

"This is all my fault, darling. I thought while you were in the hospital, I'd take baby girl for a check-up."

"But I never imagined they'd get into a car accident on the way."

I felt his voice growing more and more distant. My vision went black, and I collapsed to the ground.

I could vaguely hear Zoran's frantic calls in the distance.

When I came to, he had already carried me to the car.

Seeing me awake, he anxiously said, "Darling, hang in there. I'm taking you to the hospital right now."

I grabbed him, my voice hoarse as I said, "Zoran, take me to see baby girl's body."

"Darling, they were run over by a large truck. Baby girl's body... it's been crushed beyond recognition." Zoran said with red-rimmed eyes, pounding the steering wheel with force.

This usually emotionally stable man had now turned into a wild beast."Zoran, I was afraid it would break your heart to see her, so I took the liberty of having our baby girl's body cremated. Darling, it's all my fault. You can hit me, curse me, whatever you need, but you must stay strong."

"I think baby girl's spirit in heaven wouldn't want to see you so heartbroken."

I stared at Zoran, dumbfounded, my heart feeling as if it had been torn apart. How could he be so cruel?

Was he afraid I'd notice something was wrong if I saw our daughter's body?

But she was flesh of my flesh, the precious child I had carried for ten months. How could he not even let me see baby girl one last time?

"Darling, once you've recovered, we can try for another child. I promise I'll take better care of them next time, and make sure nothing bad happens," Zoran vowed.

"Zoran, I need some time alone," I said, closing my eyes in despair.

"Darling, don't be like this. Baby girl is watching over you from heaven. You have to be strong. And no matter what happens, I'll always be by your side," Zoran said earnestly.

Always by my side?

I laughed bitterly to myself. What a mockery those words were.He thinks this injury wasn't enough, and he's planning to keep hurting me?

Now, I have no love left for him whatsoever. I'm barely able to contain my hatred and not expose his hypocritical face. The only thing keeping me in check is my sole focus: to avenge my baby girl!

I'll make everyone who caused my daughter's death pay the price.

Just then, a phone call suddenly came through.

He glanced at me furtively, deliberately turning away as he spoke a few words to the person on the other end.

After hanging up, he turned to me and said, "Darling, that was the highway patrol. They want me to come down and handle some follow-up matters about the accident. You be a good girl and wait for me at home."

He leaned over from the driver's seat, stretching out to give me a gentle hug.
