Chapter 11: The Road to the Unexpected
The bus rattled down the highway, the engine humming beneath Tobi's seat as he leaned against the window, watching the landscape blur past. Lagos was getting closer.
His heart drummed a steady rhythm in his chest. Dayo.
He had imagined this moment a hundred times—seeing him again, feeling his warmth, breathing the same air. But now, as the bus cut through the early morning mist, something gnawed at him.
Chike.
His words still lingered in Tobi's head.
"You'll come back different. I can feel it."
Tobi exhaled sharply, shaking the thought away. This trip was for Dayo. Not Chike.
The bus jolted, snapping him out of his thoughts. A woman at the front muttered a prayer under her breath. The driver barely glanced up, focused on the winding road ahead.
Tobi sighed and adjusted his earphones, letting music drown out the world. But just as he settled in—
A presence beside him made him stiffen.
Someone had taken the empty seat next to him.
He glanced sideways, expecting an elderly woman or a tired traveler.
Instead, he locked eyes with a stranger.
Tall, broad-shouldered, and staring directly at him.
Tobi tensed. The man's gaze wasn't casual—it was intentional. Intense. Like he knew something Tobi didn't.
Tobi cleared his throat and shifted slightly. "Uh… hello?"
The man's lips curled into a smirk. "You're going to Lagos."
It wasn't a question.
Tobi frowned. "Obviously."
The man chuckled, but there was something unsettling about it. "I know."
Tobi's skin prickled. He turned fully now, studying the stranger's features—dark skin, sharp jawline, piercing eyes that seemed to see too much.
Tobi didn't like it.
"Do I know you?" he asked.
The man's smirk deepened. "Not yet."
Tobi stiffened. "Excuse me?"
The man leaned back, crossing his arms. "Relax. Just making conversation."
Tobi wasn't convinced. There was something off about him.
His mind screamed ignore him, but his body remained tense, locked in place.
"Fine," Tobi muttered. "What's your name?"
The man tilted his head. "David."
Tobi narrowed his eyes. "And why do you care where I'm going?"
David's smile faded slightly. "Because, Tobi…" He let the name roll off his tongue like he had known it forever.
Tobi's breath hitched.
He hadn't told him his name.
The bus lurched forward, but Tobi barely noticed.
His pulse pounded. His fingers curled into fists.
Who the hell was this guy?
And how did he know him?
