A change of plans

Chapter 10: A Change of Plans

Tobi zipped up his bag, his chest rising and falling with determination. Lagos. Dayo. Nothing else mattered.

He kept his movements quiet, careful not to wake Chike, who was sprawled across his bed, one arm flung over his face. Good. Let him stay asleep.

Tobi wasn't in the mood for more of his teasing, especially after last night.

He slung his backpack over his shoulder and reached for the door—

"Where you dey go?"

Tobi froze.

Chike's voice was heavy with sleep, but there was something sharp beneath it. Suspicion.

Tobi turned slowly. "Nowhere."

Chike propped himself up on one elbow, eyes narrowing. "Nowhere, but you carry bag? You be thief?"

Tobi exhaled sharply. "I just need air."

Chike snorted. "With a whole backpack?"

Tobi's grip on the strap tightened. "Maybe I want to clear my head."

Chike sat up fully now, rubbing a hand over his face. "You're lying."

Tobi's pulse quickened. He needed to leave before Chike figured it out.

Chike studied him for a moment, then suddenly swung his legs off the bed. "Aight, I follow you."

Tobi's stomach dropped. "What?"

Chike yawned, stretching. "I no dey sleep well. Since you wan go clear head, make we go together."

Shit.

Tobi forced a chuckle. "No need. Just… go back to sleep."

Chike's eyes locked onto his. For the first time since they met, he wasn't smiling.

A strange tension stretched between them. Tobi could feel it creeping under his skin, tightening around his ribs.

"Where. Are. You. Going?" Chike's voice was low now, almost quiet.

Tobi hesitated. If he said Lagos, Chike would demand an explanation. He couldn't let that happen.

"Just town," he lied.

Chike didn't blink. "With a backpack?"

Tobi clenched his jaw. Why was he making this so difficult?

Chike's gaze flickered to the bag, then back to Tobi's face. "You're running."

Tobi stiffened. "What?"

Chike stood up slowly, his presence suddenly too close, too overwhelming. "You're running away from something."

Tobi swallowed. "That's ridiculous."

Chike tilted his head. "Then why can't you look me in the eye?"

Tobi hated how Chike could see through him.

"I don't owe you an explanation," he muttered, reaching for the door again.

Chike exhaled, running a hand over his head. "Fine. Go."

Tobi blinked. That was… easier than he expected.

But just as he turned the handle—

"You'll come back different," Chike said, voice unreadable. "I can feel it."

Tobi ignored the way his chest tightened at those words.

Without looking back, he left.
