Chapter 19: A Twist of Fate

Maya's eyes widened as she stood beside Alex's hospital bed. She had been visiting him every day, hoping that he would wake up and remember her. But as she looked at him now, she realized that something was off.

"Alex, can you hear me?" Maya asked, her voice shaking slightly.

Alex's eyes fluttered open, and he looked at Maya with a confused expression. "Who are you?" he asked.

Maya's heart sank. "I'm Maya," she said. "We've been friends for a long time."

But Alex just shook his head. "I don't remember you," he said.

Maya felt a pang of desperation. She had been counting on Alex remembering her, remembering their friendship and their feelings for each other. But now, it seemed like that was all gone.

Just then, Alex's eyes lit up. "Rachel," he said. "I remember Rachel."

Maya's eyes narrowed. "What about Rachel?" she asked.

Alex's smile was weak, but it was there. "I love her," he said. "I have to see her."

Maya felt a wave of anger wash over her. She had been so sure that Alex would remember her, that he would love her back. But now, it seemed like he only cared about Rachel.

"I'll go get her," Maya said, her voice cold.

As she walked out of the hospital room, Maya couldn't help but feel a sense of betrayal. Alex was supposed to love her, not Rachel. And now, it seemed like she had lost him forever.
