**Chapter 34: Human or Ghost?**

The forensic examiner's ability to determine gender simply by handling the skull left Xu Yang in awe. Though he'd seen similar scenes in movies, witnessing it firsthand felt nothing short of miraculous.

"How exactly do you tell?" Xu Yang asked curiously.

The female examiner methodically arranged the bones into a complete skeleton. Holding the skull, she explained: "Adult male and female skulls have distinct differences. Males are larger and heavier, with cranial capacities around 1450ml compared to females' 1300ml." Her finger traced the bone structure. "Variations in thickness, facial structure, orbital sockets, and mandibular height provide further clues."

Relief washed over Xu Yang. Since these remains belonged to a woman, they couldn't possibly be his grandfather's. The old man might truly still be alive!

When Xu Yang moved to collect the bones, the examiner stopped him. "These must stay for formal identification."

"My grandfather was righteous," Xu Yang countered. "These bones likely belong to an enemy he defeated."

The examiner's eyes widened. Officer Wang quickly pulled her aside for a hushed conversation. As they left, the woman called out: "Dad, don't forget dinner tonight!"

Xu Yang raised an eyebrow. "She's your daughter?"

Officer Wang sighed. "Rebellious kid. I wanted her to study literature, but she chose forensics." Changing subjects, he pressed: "What's really going on with that taxi case?"

"Meet me at midnight," Xu Yang deflected. "The truth will surface then."

Meanwhile at Wang Wei's compound in Lingzhou City, Lingguan Bureau agents Bai Wei and Wang Lin surveyed the charred remains. "Fourth Realm Bone-Tempering Martial Master," Wang Lin muttered, examining the corpse. "What could overpower him?"

Bai Wei discovered faint footprints beneath the wall. "The killer scaled two meters effortlessly." Her gaze swept the courtyard. "This reeks of sect warfare."

In their vehicle, Wang Lin showed dashcam footage of the phantom-driven BMW crash. Bai Wei replayed the moment of impact frame-by-frame. A blurred figure appeared at the video's edge during the collision—materializing from thin air.

"Enhance that section," Bai Wei ordered. The pixels resolved into a familiar silhouette. Her breath caught. "Xu Yang?"

Wang Lin frowned. "The fisherman from last night? But the timestamps match—he was miles away battling the river ghost when this happened!"

Bai Wei's fingers tightened around the tablet. "Either our friend has a doppelgänger..." She met her partner's eyes. "...or he's learned astral projection before reaching Divine Realm."

Back at the funeral shop, Xu Yang practiced talisman strokes when the bell jingled. Ma Long staggered in, reeking of alcohol. "Brother Xu! I just rode a ghost taxi! The meter ran on paper money!" He collapsed onto a coffin display, slurring: "Your ghost girlfriend's got competition..."

Upstairs, the ghost queen paused her Korean drama. Her hairpin—a centuries-old phoenix hairpin from her burial trove—glowed faintly. Through the floorboards, Xu Yang's heartbeat thundered in her ears.

*Thump-thump. Thump-thump.*

The rhythm quickened as midnight approached.
