Chapter 1: Devourer’s Awakening

The world had never been kind to Raizel Veyne.

His last moments were spent staring at the cold, damp ceiling of a forgotten prison. His limbs were bound by rusted chains, his body broken from relentless torture. Blood dripped from his lips, pooling onto the stone beneath him.

Tonight, they would execute him.

A noble son framed for treason, betrayed by the very people he once called family. His father's head had rolled before his eyes, his mother's screams still echoed in his ears. And now, he was nothing more than a discarded pawn, left to rot in the bowels of the abyss.

As the guards approached, torches casting flickering shadows on the stone walls, Raizel felt something stir deep within his soul.

A whisper.

It was not a voice, not in the conventional sense. It was something far older, something that had always been watching him.

"Devour… or be devoured."

His vision blurred. The world around him twisted.

The chains binding his wrists crumbled into dust. The floor beneath him cracked, black tendrils rising from the abyss, slithering toward him like living shadows.

The guards barely had time to react.

The moment their blades swung down, Raizel moved.

No—it wasn't movement. It was something more. Something unnatural.

His body flickered between states of existence. One moment, he was solid. The next, he was shadow. A force surged through his veins, something raw, something primeval.

A guard's blade passed through him as if he were nothing but mist. Then, in an instant, he became real again—right behind the man.

A hand pierced through the guard's chest. Raizel wasn't sure when his fingers had turned into claws, but he didn't care. He grasped something warm, something pulsating—

And he devoured it.

The guard's body withered, his flesh shriveling into dry husks, his very existence erased. And with it—Raizel felt something new.

Power.

Knowledge.

The taste of blood. The scent of fear. The rush of a life stolen.

It was intoxicating.

The second guard fell to his knees, his sword clattering to the ground. His eyes were wide with horror as Raizel stepped forward, his once-human eyes now glowing abyssal black.

"W-What are you…?" the guard stammered.

Raizel tilted his head. He wasn't sure of the answer himself.

But as the shadows around him coiled like living entities, as the whispers of the abyss grew louder, as power unlike anything he had ever imagined coursed through his veins—

He smiled.

"I am the one who devours."

With a flick of his hand, the second guard's soul was torn from his body.

The prison walls trembled. The torches flickered—then extinguished completely.

And in the darkness, Raizel Veyne took his first step toward something far beyond human.
