Adventurer's Guild

After receiving my identification card from Professor, I went to the Adventurer's Guild that evening. It wasn't that far from the Good Man's Bar, so it didn't take me much time.

'It's really grand.'

I was quite amazed when I first saw the grand Guild Hall. To be honest, nothing that I've seen in this entire town was as big as this hall.

There was a lady dressed with a fine suit at the reception. She looked quite young to be a receptionist, maybe a year or two older than me.

'I guess I have to register there?'

"Welcome to the Adventurer's Guild, Sir. How may I help you?" Her smile couldn't be more polite than this.

"I would like to register as an adventurer."

"We'll need a verification of your identity to proceed, sir."

I took out my identification card that Professor Larry gave me. It was a rectangular plastic card with my details written on it.

Birth place: Pearlton, Glorior Kingdom

Code: 8AN782

The Glorior Kingdom is the kingdom of the humans, whereas elves call their territory as the Silva Kingdom. And the Demigod kingdom from where I came from is called the Celesti Kingdom.

And as for the code, I had no idea what the hell that was. Most likely all the humans had some kind of code in their identification card for easy analysis.

The receptionist wrote down something while stealing glances and studying me. Then she left her spot and went inside and after sometime she came back again with a card of the same size as my identification card.

"Here is your Identification Card and this new card is your Adventurer Card. You can collect the rewards by showing this if you have completed a mission. You can take a mission from that board."

She pointed me to a board where various papers were pinned down. In the meantime, I took my Adventurer Card and studied it. It was about the same size as my identification card but slightly heavier.

I also came to realize that unlike Rowan, who recognised I was a demi-god just by considering some facts, it wasn't easy for others to find any difference.

'I think there's a chance that Rowan was hiding other things about our encounter.'

"Can I pick any mission from there?" I asked, pointing towards the board.

"No, sir. Since you are an F-Rank adventurer, you can pick up to E rank at maximum and D rank if you are in a group of five. You can collect contribution points by doing more missions and increase your rank."

'Hmm... A simple but safe process. I guess they don't take any responsibility for the death of an adventurer. So they pulled a smart trick like this.'

I went to the board and saw the paper posters showing the quests and rewards.

My Bella is a cute golden cat with yellow and green eyes.

'What? 10 silvers for just finding a cat? No, how do I find a cat in this big town myself. Is there some special skill to do that? And I think I saw a similar cat in front of Good Man's bar.'

Hunt Toothfangs

Reward: 1 gold

I saw three toothfangs near the sewers of our house. I request any Adventurer for an inspection.

Toothfangs. Large rat like monsters. They are as strong as the goblins and are generally found in sewers.

The request was posted by a Civil Servant. I thought he might be quite rich giving 1 gold for killing three toothfang.

I took both the pages with 'Toothfang hunting request' and 'finding the cat' requests with me. I decided to complete both tasks quickly before sleeping tonight.

As both of them wasn't that difficult for me at my current level, I assumed it wouldn't take that much time.

Just as I assumed, the light brown cat I saw in front of Good Man's Bar belonged to Mrs. Dorey. I guess my luck was quite good today.

It was already late evening when I reached the Civil Servant's house after returning Mrs. Dorey's cat.

Knock.

Knock.

"... Who is it?"

I heard a female voice from inside after a few seconds of knocking.

"I am an adventurer. I am here to kill the Toothfangs."

The door opened with a clicking sound and I was greeted by a voluptuous woman in her thirties.

"You? You're just a kid. Are you sure you'll be fine?" Though she said that in an inappropriate way, I could see that she was just worried.

"Don't worry, Maam. I have my ways."

"... Well, if you say so. The entrance to the sewers is just across the road. Just come here again once you have completed the task."

"Okay"

I didn't waste much time there and directly went down the sewers after slight preparation. But the problem was, even after searching for several minutes, I didn't encounter any toothfangs there. Only awful smell approached me from everywhere.

'....Argh...this smell. Luckily I changed my clothes to the old tight training outfit before entering the sewers.'

Just as I thought of abandoning this fruitless mission, I sensed something running towards me at a terrifying speed.

"Kieeeekk!!!"

Something jumped at me from behind before I could think of something else. I leaped to the right and swung my jian towards it.

The body of the Toothfang got divided into two parts and I could feel a sudden numbness in my hand holding the sword.

'Strange... They're much harder to cut than what I assumed. And much faster than the goblins too. Are they really supposed to be this strong?'

I didn't really mind that much initially, thinking only two of them are left but the as I kept walking further into the sewers, I was starting to get a really eerie feeling.

Suddenly, I realised something and a chilling sensation suddenly spread down my spine.

'There's no... no message for killing the Toothfang? Wait... How does that make any sense?'

I was starting to get a really bad feeling now. I don't think there's any monster out there that doesn't give experience points.

"Kieeeekk!!!"

"Kiiieeeee kieekk!!!"

The sound of the toothfangs began to increase so I had to abandon my thoughts for the meantime.

'Three..no four more. The task said there were three toothfangs only...I really need to increase my pay.'

I didn't really have a problem with a couple of more Toothfangs. Even though they seemed stronger than the normal ones, they weren't stronger than the gnollls I fought in the forest.

But there was something else I was worried about.

'If I skip my sleep today too, it'd be my second day without getting any sleep. Mom's gonna kill me if she finds out.'

'Sigh!'

"Let's get this done."

That was the thirteenth monster I killed after entering the sewers.

The more I killed them, the more certain I became that this sewer had some secrets hiding within it. It felt like someone messed with them intentionally, in other words, they were used as lab rats.

Their numbers decreased gradually as I went deep inside the sewers and finally they stopped coming out at all. After walking for some miles, I saw a faint, tiny light coming from the left side of the sewers.

'What's this? If I wasn't careful I would have missed it. A hidden passage?'

I followed the passage silently until I could finally hear some murmurs.

At this point, I could already confirm that some humans had to be involved with this incident. I just had to confirm that myself.

'...Four humans. Doesn't look like they're properly trained based on their behaviours.'

The four humans were just standing idly or talking about some random gossip while guarding some strange laboratory. I hid myself the best I could and decide to listen to them about some information.

Though they mostly gossipped about useless topics, I did succeed to take out something important.

"Hey, when is the Doctor coming again? "

"Hah... I don't know, don't ask me. He said he won't return this week."

"What? Are we just supposed to wait here then? I heard the adventure guild posted a quest for those nasty rats."

"Ah! We don't need to worry about that. It's only an E Rank quest. I left some rats along the way so I doubt they can make it upto here. Well, even if they did, we can just kill those novice adventurers ourselves."

"..."

'...So the person they call the Doctor looks like the mastermind behind this.'

Well, that was the only useful thing I could hear from them. After that, they started their useless talking again.

'I am feeling quite sleepy now. I shouldn't drag this more. Or maybe I should just try to gather some information from them?'

After thinking for a while on how to approach them, a brilliant idea suddenly popped out in my mind.

I changed myself to the bloodied but grand clothes that I wore yesterday and decided to directly revealed myself just my walking into them.

I showed a look of disgust in my face and I started my bloodied sword with an old piece of cloth.

"This damn sewer. I'll really want to kill those bastards who called me in this hellhole."

The guards quickly alarmed themselves and raised their swords on hearing someone approaching them.

"You... Who are you? State your business here." One of them asked while glancing towards the other three.

"You son of a bitch. First, you ask to meet me in this god damned sewer and then point a sword at me. And why there are so many rats in this filthy place? Call that bastard 'Doctor' right now. I need to get this done quickly." I screamed out. My face seemed like it was bursting with rage and annoyance.

The guards lowered their swords but still no one answered. They looked quite puzzled and exchanged glances between them. Finally one of the guards took the initiative to talk.

"I-I am sorry, sir. The doctor just went out to run an errand. He said he would be back in a week but we do have a way to communicate with him in case of an emergency. If your business is important, we can just ask him to come sooner."

"Then what are you waiting for? Bastards! do that quickly. Do you want to lose your life that badly? "

"Umm.. B-but... who might you be, sir? I am sorry we were not told about your visit."

This question almost brought a smile on my face, which I of course couldn't show.

I was in a bind as my answers were quite limited here. I had to identify myself as someone powerful but I don't want to use someone else's name which might create some problem for me later on.

"Me? I am the courtier of the great King Johnathan de Graham Serendipity III."
