A lead to my revenge

If they find me as just a normal adventurer, they'd definitely try to kill me here.

I also didn't want to use some other big names as I didn't know the depth of the situation.

So considering everything, this was the best possible method that popped up in my head.

And now that I have personally seen the impact of such a situation, I strongly believed it'd work.

'Plus, if something goes wrong, I can always kill them. Not that I really wanted to.'

"I am the courtier of the great King Johnathan de Graham Serendipity III. I came here by the orders of his majesty."

The guards widened their eyes and quickly put their weapons back in their scabbard.

"K-king J-johnathan de Serereri III?"

"You dare pronounce his Majesty's name incorrectly?"

"We are very sorry, sir. I-I was just surprised. I'll contact him immediately." And just as I expected, all of them looked totally out of their wits.

"Okay. And you..."

I pointed to the other guard behind him.

"Show me how far the project has proceeded. I can't just wait here idly. The smell is suffocating me."

He looked towards the other guard in panic and receiving a slight nod, he ran towards me.

"Y-yes sir. Please come with me."

The place had a couple of toothfangs who were barely alive and strange liquid was being injected into its body through a thin pipe. Several other bottles with light green coloured liquid were also kept on the shelf.

"I don't really know much since the Doctor rarely discloses anything. But we already caught several toothfangs and tried injecting our new serum."

I didn't answer anything and just noded my head slightly. The guard sighed softly in relief and continued to speak.

"The Doctor is quite sure that this new serum will be successful. Well, we already contacted Mr.H and he said he would visit us in two months. We just need to complete this before that. "

"I see. It's going quite better than I expected." I replied in approval.

"Yes. To be honest, all of us thought he was a crazy delusional scientist at first. But once we learned that Mr. H has got our backs, we were quite surprised. Well, having some bigshot from Elysium as a backer has a lot of perks after all."

'What!!? Elysium?? But why would someone be interested in such an experiment here. Wait! Experiments?'

Suddenly something flashed through my mind, and it was really enough to take away all the drowsiness for today.

It was just a wild guess- a stupid possibility, but my mind was completely blown away.

I remembered the last talk I had with my mother that night. The night where it all began.

It became very hard for me to calm down. But still, I couldn't stop here. I need to find out who Mr. H is.

The other guard that went to contact the Doctor arrived, he was holding a transparent glass ball with the size of a fist in his left hand.

'It looks like the item used to communicate.'

"The Doctor has asked you to wait. He said he'll be arriving soon. "

He was sweating profusely and one of his hands was holding to the hilt of his sword, as if he would strike the moment I refuse him.

"Okay, no problem."

He looked relieved for a second. I walked a little towards the green colored liquid bottles as if I was more interested in the project but the next moment I took out the short knife and thrust the one guiding me from behind.

"Thud! "

'What? You can get experience while killing humans too? I had no clue about it.'

Though I never knew of this fact, it certainly explains why some people really level up faster and why they grow so much stronger after involving themselves in a war.

It rewards you for killing your own kinds too.

'I don't know what this Stigmata system is, but it's really messed up. But that again poses another question. Why didn't I get experience after killing the Toothfangs? Is it because they are already considered dead after being experimented? Or because the system couldn't recognise the mutated ones?'

I could only make some guesses but I thought it made more sense to be the second one.

"K-kill him. He's an intruder"

The others quickly rushed at me raising their swords. These guys didn't receive any training and their levels were also very low. I never wanted to kill them but I don't want to leave any loose ends here.

If there's a chance that I'll be in danger because of you, you die here. It's not like I have any choice.

Just by looking at them, I could guess they were commoners without proper training. I guess their situations compelled them to become criminals.

'They were just cannon fodders. The higher ups in here are using people who are in need of money.'

I left the sewers after killing everyone there and saw a couple of people waiting for me at the entrance.

"Ah! You're here. I really thought you died there. I was quite worried. "

It was the same voluptuous woman I met before entering the sewers. There was another person with her this time. A man wearing a clean suit.

'Looks like her husband. Is he the one who posted the quest?'

"The information was wrong. There were thirteen Toothfangs and maybe more still hiding. Don't let anyone enter here until the Guild arrives. I'll inform them. It's a crime scene."

"A crime scene!!?"

Both of them looked quite shocked. The man came forward to talk to me this time.

"I am sorry. I shouldn't have assumed that there were only three toothfangs. I was the one who posted the quest. Please let me compromise."

"It's okay. Please just sign here in the quest page. I really need to rest now. Just be more careful next time."

I decided not to ask more money as it wasn't really his fault. Moreover, this sewer didn't belong to him. He just came forward and informed the Guild what he saw.

'Well, let's just blame the Adventurer's Guild'

At the same time, at a short distance from the secret base in the sewers, there was a brown coloured owl, waiting silently as if it was quietly listening to everything around its vicinity.

"Hoot! King Johnathan de Graham Serendipity III? Hoot! Hoot!"

A normal owl can't speak any human languages. But it was different for a tamed one, the ones trained with mana by the tamers from quite an early age.

The brown owl, after murmuring those words, it silently flew away towards the exit of the sewers.

'If it was some other E Rank adventurer instead of me who took that quest, he would have surely died there. Well, I guess I saved someone tonight.'

The Civil Servant still gave me 30 more coppers as an apology. He really was a good man.

I returned to the Guild but it was already closed. It was almost past midnight and I couldn't afford to wait till morning and I didn't even know when I'll wake up.

To be honest, my situation right now was quite worse. I haven't slept for almost two days and I killed four humans. I know I didn't have any choice but it was quite different from killing a monster.

Everything has a first time. And I felt like throwing up after this first time of mine.

Fortunately, I found out a lot of valuable information about the experiments and now I have a lead too.

The one called Doctor.

I have a gut feeling that Mr. H is somehow related to the One eyed Bastard incident. But I couldn't be sure.

In the end, I decided to leave a letter at the mailbox of the Guild. Hopefully, they'll find this the first thing in the morning.

I mentioned how the information was wrong and I had to kill thirteen Toothfangs instead of three, how the toothfangs were not normal and didn't give any experience and finally I wrote about the secret base I found.

Of course I didn't mention anything about killing those humans. I just mentioned that they were already dead when I arrived.

Luckily that night, I managed to find an inn that was still open. A few drunkards were playing cards while drinking but there was no way that would bother me now.

I went to my room, took a quick bath and jumped directly on my bed. Right now, there's nothing else that I want other than this warm bed.

"...It's been really a long day."
