Chapter 29: Tethered by Fate

Sophia's heart pounded as she stood in the witches' woods, the energy within her surging uncontrollably. The moment Lucian had teleported her away from Sean, she had barely caught her breath before the land beneath her feet responded to her presence. Vibrant green tendrils of life sprouted where she stood, flowers blooming in places where none should grow. The witches, hidden among the dense trees, observed her with wary eyes, whispering incantations to one another.

She clutched her arms around herself, the dull ache of her growing wings pulsing beneath her skin. It was becoming unbearable, an ache that no words could soothe. Lucian had abandoned her again—not out of cruelty, but restraint. She could feel it, his burning need to claim her warring against his will to protect her innocence. And yet, his absence left a void that neither magic nor newfound power could fill.

A branch snapped in the distance. Sophia tensed. A figure emerged from the shadows, his silver hair glinting under the moonlight. One of the witches stepped forward, a staff in her bony hands.

"She is awakening," the crone murmured, her ancient eyes locking onto Sophia's. "And you have come to see it for yourself."

Lucian exhaled sharply, stepping forward. "I never meant for her to be here."

"Yet, she is," the witch replied. "And she has already begun to change. You can smell it, can't you? The magic in her blood."

Sophia swallowed hard, watching Lucian. His usually composed expression was shattered, his hands clenched at his sides. She stepped closer, hesitant. "Lucian..."

His eyes darkened, the predator within barely restrained. "You should not be here."

She took another step, defiant. "Neither should you."

His control snapped. In an instant, he had closed the distance between them, his fingers grazing the curve of her jaw. "You don't understand what you're doing to me, Sophia. What you've always done."

The witches murmured, the air thick with the scent of magic and desire. Sophia felt her pulse hammer against her ribs. Fate had tethered them, but at what cost?

"Then show me," she whispered.

Lucian's resolve wavered, his grip tightening. The battle within him was far from over, and Sophia knew—this was only the beginning.
