Chapter 30: Shadows of Desire

Sophia's breath came in uneven gasps as she stood at the heart of the witches' woods. The air buzzed with energy, thick and potent, reacting to the raw power awakening within her. Where her bare feet touched the ground, grass and flowers sprang to life, pulsing with an otherworldly glow. She could feel the magic stirring inside her, desperate to be unleashed, but fear coiled in her chest like a serpent.

Lucian had been silent since teleporting her away from Sean. He stood at the edge of the clearing, his body rigid, his eyes darker than she had ever seen. The way Sean had looked at her, touched her, spoke to her—it had enraged him, but there was something more. The way Lucian avoided her gaze now, how his hands curled into fists, as if holding himself back, sent a shiver down her spine.

"Lucian…" Her voice was soft, almost uncertain. She took a step toward him, but he stiffened, turning his back to her.

"You should rest," he said curtly. "Your body is undergoing changes, and your powers are reacting to this place."

Sophia frowned. He had never been this cold with her before. She could feel his turmoil, sense the war raging within him. His need, his possessiveness, but also his restraint. It made her heart ache.

"Why won't you look at me?" she whispered, closing the distance between them.

Lucian exhaled sharply, his shoulders tense. "Because if I do, I won't be able to stop myself."

Sophia's lips parted at his admission, heat rushing through her veins. She reached out, her fingers brushing his arm, and he shuddered.

"I want you to look at me," she said, her voice gaining confidence. "I need you to see me."

His control snapped. In a heartbeat, he turned, his hands cupping her face, his thumb brushing over her lower lip. His golden eyes burned into hers, filled with a storm of emotions. "You don't understand what you're asking for, Sophia."

"Then show me," she challenged.

Lucian groaned, his lips descending on hers in a fierce, claiming kiss. It wasn't gentle—it was raw, desperate, filled with all the longing he had been suppressing. She melted into him, her hands tangling in his hair as she surrendered to the fire consuming them both.

But just as quickly as it started, he tore himself away, breathing heavily. "I need to keep you safe," he said hoarsely. "From them. From me."

Sophia's eyes shone with determination. "I don't want to be protected from you, Lucian."

The ground beneath them pulsed, and suddenly, a soft whispering filled the air. The witches had sensed her magic. They were coming.

Lucian's expression darkened. "We have to go. Now."

As the wind howled through the trees, Sophia knew one thing for certain—there was no turning back. Her awakening had begun, and so had the war for her heart.
