Chapter 32 – Whispers of the Witches

The air thickened with an ancient pulse, the kind of magic that seeped into the bones, whispering secrets of old. Sophia could feel it—tugging at the edges of her mind, wrapping around her like an invisible thread. The witches were aware of her presence.

Lucian moved fast, closing the distance between them in a blink. His grip on her wrist was firm but not unkind. "We can't stay here," he murmured. "The witches will want answers, and if they see how your powers are manifesting…" He hesitated, jaw tightening. "Some will want to help. Others will want to control you."

Sophia shivered. "I didn't mean to—" She gestured to the vibrant greenery that had erupted around them, life blooming where there had once been nothing but decay. "It just happened."

"I know." His eyes softened, but only for a moment. "That's why we need to keep moving."

But before they could take a step, a sudden gust of wind howled through the trees, carrying with it the scent of herbs and something ancient—something powerful. Shadows twisted between the gnarled roots of the trees, taking form.

Sophia's breath hitched. A figure emerged, cloaked in flowing black robes, a hood concealing most of her face. Despite the eerie entrance, there was no immediate sense of danger. The woman stepped closer, tilting her head as if studying Sophia.

"You are unlike the others," the woman murmured, her voice smooth, ageless. "The land speaks through you."

Lucian immediately positioned himself in front of Sophia, muscles coiled, his entire being radiating protectiveness. "We're just passing through."

The witch chuckled, as if amused by his defensiveness. "Do not mistake me for your enemy, Alpha. I have watched over these woods longer than your kingdom has stood. If I wished harm upon the girl, it would have already been done."

Sophia stepped beside Lucian, her voice steady despite the storm of emotions inside her. "Then who are you?"

The woman finally pushed back her hood, revealing long silver hair and piercing violet eyes. "My name is Lilith," she said. "And I have been waiting for you."

Sophia's stomach tightened. "Waiting for me?"

Lilith's gaze didn't waver. "Your arrival was foretold. And if you wish to survive what is coming, you will need my help."

Lucian's shoulders remained tense. "Why would you help us?"

Lilith smiled, though it held a hint of sorrow. "Because once, long ago, I swore an oath to a woman who looked very much like her." Her eyes flickered to Sophia, filled with something akin to recognition. "Your mother, child."

Sophia's heart stopped.

Her mother.

Lucian stiffened beside her, but Sophia barely noticed. Her pulse roared in her ears, her thoughts a mess of tangled emotions. "You knew my mother?" she whispered.

Lilith nodded. "And if you wish to learn the truth about yourself, you must come with me."

The forest around them held its breath, the weight of fate pressing down on them. Sophia's journey had only just begun.
