CHAPTER 16

The Weight of Secrets...

William’s POV

I had just wrapped up the last of my paperwork for the evening when I saw him—my father-in-law—pacing anxiously at the gate of the office. His eyes, red-rimmed and wide with fear, darted from side to side as if searching for something—or someone.

“Williams!” he shouted the moment he caught sight of me.

Alarm shot through me. “Dad? What are you doing here?” I hurried to him, trying to make sense of his disheveled state. His shirt was untucked, his breathing ragged.

He grabbed my arm. “The cops… they just showed up. Out of nowhere. They took Jade away, Williams. What’s happening? What has my daughter done to deserve this?!” His voice cracked, and I could see the tears beginning to form.

I led him to the bench just outside the building, placing a steadying hand on his shoulder. “Let’s sit down for a moment,” I said gently.
