CHAPTER 15

Things Fall Apart...

Jade POV

"Jade, when I was in middle school, my dad was protesting against wrongful dismissal… His leg got crushed under a forklift. He didn’t even get proper treatment, just a bandage and a warning. They dragged him to court the next day." Williams’ voice trembled through the phone. "They said it was equipment damage. My mum had to pay the company back for ten years, even after they fired him."

I felt a strange weight in my chest as he spoke. Why is he suddenly telling me this? Why now?

“…Having no power is a sin, and going against people with power is a sin…” he said, and I heard it—the crack in his voice. The raw ache beneath his words. The kind of pain you don’t share unless you’re already falling apart.

Oh, Will…

“…I wanted to change that, Jade. I wanted to show the world the obvious fact that everyone is equal before the law!” His voice rose, trembling with rage and heartbreak.
