CHAPTER 14

Ashes of What Was Owed...

Nathaniel POV

The soles of my shoes were thinning, the last card in my wallet was gone, and everything I wore was either borrowed, sold, or no longer mine. Even the air felt like it cost too much to breathe. With nothing left, I did the one thing I’d sworn never to do again—I went to see him.

My father.

He was at one of his many construction sites, standing like a god among mortals, barking orders with that arrogant pride of his. I didn’t approach him right away. I perched on the hood of his sleek black car like a stray cat, waiting for him to notice me. He always noticed. Especially when it inconvenienced him.

He came out of the site, his suit unwrinkled despite the dust in the air, and our eyes met as I jumped down from the bonnet.

“This time again, you’re resolving it with money?” I asked without preamble.

He didn’t even flinch. He knew exactly what I meant.
