The Price of Love...
Third Person POV
Meanwhile...
The words William had whispered to Jade’s father—words about taking a settlement—haunted the older man as he shuffled through the streets. The lines on his face seemed deeper, more hollow, and his shoulders carried a weight heavier than time itself. He had made a promise to his daughter, and though his heart ached with helplessness, he would keep it.
He went first to the house of his soon-to-be in-laws. Pride would’ve stopped most men, but desperation has no room for dignity. With his head low and heart in hand, he begged for a loan. They gave it, reluctantly, and he left with the money clutched tightly, like a man holding his last hope. From there, he went to a few friends, some old, some estranged. By dusk, he’d gathered half a million dollars in wadded bills and folded checks.
