CHAPTER 19

The Joy and Pain in Having a Child

Jade POV

“One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight…”

The chorus of the inmates echoed across the bare yard as we squatted in unison under the early morning sun. It was only 7 a.m., yet the prison officers already had us lined up for physical training like we were soldiers. My thighs burned, my breath came in ragged bursts, and my vision felt like it was starting to blur at the edges.

“Next routine! Let’s go!” the trainee barked orders, but his voice sounded muffled, like it was coming from the bottom of a deep tunnel.

Why is the ground spinning?

The dirt beneath me shifted. It was like the world tilted sideways, and I couldn’t hold my balance. My knees buckled, and I felt my body fall—slow, weightless, and powerless to stop it.

Thud!

A flash of pain, then darkness.

I could hear voices—distant, unclear, like echoes from a dream.

“Prisoner 208?”

Another voice, sharper now.

“208? 208!”
