Sitting on the ground with my knees pulled to my chest, I watch the dead leaves burn to ash in front of me. There was nothing that could prepare me for the sickening smell of a burning body or what it looked like while it was burning. But somehow, I cannot take my eyes off it.
No tears slide down my face as I watch David's body burn. The sun is beginning to set in the distance, and the air is slowly getting cooler. I tilt my head up to the sky and look at the clouds. It appears that another storm is rolling in.
The thought of leaving his body in the middle of the forest for the wild animals to pick over sends a shiver up my spine.
The warrior who stayed behind sits down beside me. He shrugs off his coat and throws it over my bare legs. I look over at him, and he looks oddly familiar.
He catches me glancing at him and shuffles awkwardly on the ground. "How long do you plan on staying out here?"
