The Alpha House stood in brooding silence as dusk crept over the horizon. Inside, I was preparing for my shift. I moved methodically, organizing vials of medication, checking patient files, and reviewing the medical logs from the past week. The sterile quiet of the medical wing was a comfort. It was my domain, my sanctuary within the sanctuary. There, I was in control.
Her fingers stilled as she reviewed a particularly detailed report of one of the recent patients—a young recruit who had been injured during the recent rogue attack. I hadn't had time to finish my analysis before the quiet of the night was shattered by the unmistakable sound of rapid footsteps in the corridor outside.
