This was a rare opportunity.
Lucas had offered to answer my questions, and I wasn't about to waste it.
"How do you explain the contract? What's with the photo? You told the police you had critical information, so what was it? Why did you suddenly drop the investigation after that call? And who was on the phone?"
I fired off my questions all at once. Lucas smirked.
"Can we go one at a time?"
I was desperate for answers. These unresolved issues had been weighing me down like a stone on my chest.
Lucas took my hand and led me a little further back from the waves, settling us on the dry sand.
"I said I'd answer, so I will. But don't interrupt me while I'm talking," he said.
I took a deep breath, trying to suppress my nervousness, and nodded.
Lucas bent one leg, resting an arm on his knee as he gazed out at the shimmering moonlit sea.
