Cain The Bodyguard

Now that SCP-073 had become a Friend of the Anomalies, Luo Shu flipped to the latest entry in the Anomaly Catalog.

[Anomalous Properties: Enemy of Life. As Adam's son, the first murderer, Cain is not merely a man—he is the primordial adversary of all living things. His "damage reflection" and "soil sterilization" are but surface manifestations. He is existence's antithesis.]

[X (Friend of the Anomalies activations remaining today: 1)]

Luo Shu's blood ran cold.

This was Cain's true nature?

The gentle scholar was a demon in angel's guise?

And SCP-076 ("Able"), the Foundation's infamous "Dragon-Proud Heaven," was actually… a victim of fratricide?

Was this the truth behind the biblical tale?

He wanted to ask Cain directly—but didn't dare.

Foundation files noted Cain's visceral rejection of SCP-076's records. Whatever had happened, it was a wound never to be reopened.

Prying might turn an ally into an enemy.

Better to test the Friend of the Anomalies perk instead.

With a thought, the final line updated:

Into the Depths

Cain, ever the altruist, urged him onward. "We must hurry! Lives are at stake below!"

Luo Shu swallowed hard. "Right. Let's go."

With Cain as his bodyguard, they descended to Sublevel -4.

"Leave containment to me," Cain said warmly. "I'll ensure your safety."

Luo Shu almost teared up.

This is the VIP treatment.

He abandoned the sparking UMP45-Roomba without a second glance.

The poor drone's red-dot sight flickered mournfully:

"You gave me life… only to discard me?"

Sublevel -3: Low-Threat Zone

Site-17's layout differed from Site-19's. Here, sublevels were divided by threat level, not object class.

Sublevel -3 housed low-risk humanoids.

With Cain present, anomalies here behaved.

The moment they stepped off the stairs, Cain roared:

"Cain of Sumer stands here! Who dares move?!"

Silence.

Not a single entity twitched.

Luo Shu grinned. I could get used to this.

Sublevel -4: The Siren's Call

The next floor greeted them with a low, resonant hum—like a whale's song.

Cain was unaffected.

Luo Shu wasn't so lucky.

The sound drilled into his skull, unraveling his thoughts. His vision swam—

Cain yanked him back to Sublevel -3.

"SCP-327," Cain growled. "Wait here. I'll handle it."

Luo Shu recognized the designation:

SCP-327 ("The Mermaid")

psychoacoustic predator. Its song induced madness, algal blooms, and—if uninterrupted—death.

Normally confined to a soundproofed saline tank, the mermaid had escaped. Its lid hung open, its human-faced silhouette visible atop the tank.

Luo Shu couldn't let Cain confront it alone. SCP-327's fragile biology might not survive "Enemy of Life."

"I'm coming," he said, flipping to Page 16Mind-Shielding Alloy.

With mental defenses active, the song became background noise.

The Mermaid's Lair

Sublevel -4's corridors were a madhouse.

Security personnel staggered aimlessly, giggling or shrieking.

At the chamber's center stood the breached containment tank.

SCP-327 lounged on its edge, humming its lethal lullaby.

Cain stepped forward, but Luo Shu stopped him.

"Let me try something first."

He activated Persuasion.

"Hey there. You're… uh, off-key."

The mermaid's head snapped toward him.

Negotiations had begun.
