SCP-327, despite its poetic designation as the "Mermaid," was no ethereal creature from fairy tales.
Up close, it resembled a bloated West Indian manatee, its head and back scarred by propeller strikes.
Its containment unit—Site-17's largest—was a 40x40-meter seawater pool, 10 meters deep, replicating its native Gulf of Mexico habitat.
When Cain saw SCP-327 perched on the tank's edge, he snarled:
"327! Who authorized your breach? Return to containment—now!"
The mermaid flinched. "Water… dirty. 327 just… needed air."
"Liar!" Cain's voice cracked like a whip. "You fouled it yourself. Wait for cleanup crews!"
"Not 327's fault!" it protested, syllables slurred. "Intruders dumped… things in water. Algae grew. No one came… so 327 left."
Luo Shu pieced it together: Chaos operatives had triggered an algal bloom.
But Cain was unmoved. "No excuses! Go back!"
As the mermaid cowered, Luo Shu intervened.
"Hold on." He stepped forward, activating Persuasion. "327's right. Chaos sabotaged its tank. We'll arrange cleaning—just stop singing and return for now."
The mermaid's bulbous eyes widened. "You… help 327?"
"Promise."
With a grateful nod, it slid back into the murky water.
As Luo Shu and Cain resealed the tank, the Anomaly Catalog updated:
[Page: 32]
[Item #: SCP-327]
[Designation: The Mermaid]
[Object Class: Euclid]
[Anomalous Properties: Song of the Sea. Effects scale with vocal talent. A golden voice soothes; a tone-deaf screech kills. [Editor's Note: Earplugs recommended.]]
[Status: Contained]
[O]
Luo Shu stared.
Is the Catalog… meme-contaminated?
The description's sudden snark unsettled him.
Regardless, "Song of the Sea" was… niche.
With his mediocre singing, it'd just be another AoE attack—stacking with Martyr's Light to cripple two senses.
Overkill.
But milestone progress was progress.
The Silent Observer
With SCP-327 secured, Luo Shu wandered Sublevel -4, casually recontaining anomalies like a gardener pruning weeds.
Cain shadowed him, reflecting any attacks—physical or mental.
If only I could keep him, Luo Shu mused.
But the Foundation distrusted Cain.
Same with SCP-076 ("Able").
Tools, not allies.
Then—something stranger.
A man in a lab coat materialized beside Cain.
"Why escort a Chaos rat?" the stranger asked.
Cain didn't turn. "He's Foundation. D-20915, containment specialist. Loyalty: provisional."
The stranger chuckled. "Your call. But he's… interesting."
With that, he walked into a wall and vanished.
Luo Shu noticed none of it.
