Lara sat by the window in her studio, reviewing some matte photographs from a recent editorial session. The sun caressed the spines of the stacked books on the shelf, and the distant sound of Thiago laughing with Diana in the garden filled the house with life.
Her phone vibrated once. "Leo" said the screen.
It wasn’t unusual for them to text or call each other, but this time the call felt different... Something in her chest told her it would be a short but important conversation.
"Hello?" she answered softly.
"Hi, Lara," he replied, calmer than she expected. "Do you have a minute?"
"I always have a minute for you," she answered sincerely, leaning against the window frame.
There was a pause. In the background, Leo seemed to be somewhere quiet, maybe his office or sitting in his car with the windows rolled up.
"I wanted you to hear it from me," he finally said. "Viridiana and I… we’re expecting another baby."
Lara took a few seconds to process it.
