Anita’s Pov

I felt the housekeeper’s question still lingering in the air, her curious gaze expectant and warm. I hadn’t been prepared for this line of questioning, nor for the intensity with which it seemed to impact Alpha Hades. He kept his expression guarded, but I noticed the slight tension in his jaw as he waited for me to answer.

Summoning my composure, I offered her a smile. “Actually, I already have a mate,” I said quietly, hoping my voice didn’t betray the heaviness that came with that admission.

The housekeeper’s face fell slightly, her eyes dimming with a flicker of disappointment. “Oh… I see,” she murmured, recovering her polite smile. “Well, forgive my assumption, Miss Anita. I only meant to say that you seem to bring such a warmth and liveliness to this home. I thought… well, perhaps I was mistaken.”

“No, no, it’s all right,” I replied quickly, my cheeks heating under the weight of her gaze. “I appreciate your kindness, really.”
