Chapter 17: A Deal in the Dark
The city streets hummed with restless energy as Elias pulled up to the address Evelyn had sent him. It was an old jazz club, tucked between buildings that had seen better days. The neon sign above the door flickered, casting eerie shadows on the pavement.
He stepped inside, the scent of whiskey and cigarette smoke curling around him. A slow, sultry tune drifted from a grand piano in the corner, played by a musician who looked like he'd been there for decades. Patrons whispered over their drinks, lost in secrets that would never see daylight.
Evelyn was already waiting for him.
She sat in a private booth, one leg crossed over the other, swirling a glass of dark liquor in her hand. The dim light caught the sharp angles of her face, making her look even more dangerous than usual.
Elias slid into the seat across from her. "Romantic choice of meeting place. I didn't take you for the sentimental type."
Evelyn smirked, but there was something else in her expression tonight—something unreadable. "I find old places like this have a way of keeping their secrets."
Elias leaned back. "Speaking of secrets, I assume you didn't bring me here for a drink."
Evelyn set her glass down, her fingers tapping against the rim. "You're too close, Mercer. Too close to something that doesn't like being found."
"Then tell me what it is," Elias pressed. "No more riddles."
She exhaled, glancing around before lowering her voice. "There's a name. One that even Voss fears. Someone pulling the strings behind every crime syndicate in this city."
Elias's jaw tightened. "Give me the name."
Evelyn hesitated, then leaned forward, close enough for him to feel the heat between them. "Lucian Vale."
The name sent a chill through him.
Evelyn watched his reaction, then whispered, "And if you're not careful, Mercer… you'll be his next problem to solve."
Elias wasn't sure what was more dangerous—Lucian Vale, or the way Evelyn was looking at him like she was daring him to step deeper into the fire.
