The cost of curiosity

Chapter 18: The Cost of Curiosity

Elias left the club with the weight of Lucian Vale's name pressing against his thoughts. The city felt different now—every shadow seemed deeper, every passerby a potential threat. He didn't scare easily, but something about this felt… bigger. More dangerous.

He didn't go straight home. Instead, he drove aimlessly, letting the streets guide him, his mind racing through every piece of the puzzle. Voss was bad enough. But if someone like him feared Vale, then Elias was dealing with a whole new level of hell.

His phone buzzed.

Unknown Number: You should stop digging, Detective.

Elias smirked, shaking his head. Classic.

He typed back: And here I thought I was just getting started.

No reply.

A second later, his rearview mirror caught movement. Headlights. Close. Too close.

Before he could react, the car behind him surged forward, slamming into his bumper. His tires screeched as he fought to regain control, veering onto a side street. The car stayed on him, relentless.

"Son of a—"

Another hit. Harder.

Elias's instincts kicked in. He yanked the wheel, sending his car into a sharp turn down an alley barely wide enough to fit through. The pursuing vehicle hesitated—just enough time for Elias to floor it, his tires spitting gravel as he shot out onto the next street.

The other car never followed.

Elias exhaled, gripping the wheel. "Alright, Vale. Message received."

But he wasn't stopping. If anything, he was more determined than ever.

And if Lucian Vale wanted him out of the game, he'd have to do a hell of a lot better than that.
